How to unlock the Baranor the Conqueror achievement in Middle-earth: Shadow of War - Definitive Guide
I ran on Nemesis difficulty which makes enemies smarter and do more damage. Some captains even have a NO CHANCE, so if you die your run is a wipe. My strategy is as follows:
I completed the outposts in a clockwise rotation whilst going for the mercenary discounts first. Then go for extra health pack skills. By your third or fourth outpost you'll most likely be able to afford a Legendary Mercenary as long as you have the three additional discounts!
Once you have all the outposts, I recommend targeting the Warchiefs with either the best disable for the fortress or the most bodyguards to save time for the Siege, of course. I also implore you to fill the outpost slots with the cheapest mercenary you can find so there isn't another orc captain there.
HINT: Constantly update your gear that you find in the field. There are insane abilities you can find that almost cripple the entire game's combat system such as earned might for damage done to your allies by enemies, which delivers you endless might for combat executions.
Also, when choosing mercenaries, make sure to pick the ones with the best abilities while ensuring these potential bodyguards don't have skills that counter each other. I was very lucky to have a Legendary merc that had poison bombs and a reduced cooldown. He completely destroyed adds and captains. Starting off can be difficult, but since this is a Middle Earth game with it's Nemesis System, make sure to exploit the captains' weaknesses.
Now, I didn't kill all the Warchiefs, just the strongest ones or the ones with multiple bodyguards to lighten the load for the final assault! Basic idea for this achievement is to get the best mercs possible the quickest because once you get two or more legendaries, you can SPAM THEM FOR EVERYTHING. This could be for remaining outposts, Warchief missions, and the grand finale.
I almost got screwed going into the overlord fight because I didn't dismiss my bodyguards before I went in, so I had to kill Takra only with Serka. I'm assuming the Overlord is a constant, so he is immune to nearly everything, but I kicked his ass by using a combat execution which dazes him because of his fear of combat executions. Once again, make sure use your silly Batclaw to escape and parachute away only to come back and stealth attack the captains(IF NOT IMMUNE). Pretty useful and cheesy.
Here are my stats for achieving Gold:
SCORE: NEW HIGH SCORE. 232326 GOLD
XP Gained 63946
Outposts Captured 5000
Min Difficulty (Nemesis): x2
Run Time (01H:31M:06): x17
DISCLAIMER: EVERY RUN IS DIFFERENT
RNG could play into how I achieved this first try.
Different Mercenaries
Different Captains with different exploits and weaknesses
I havn't tested it, but you could theoretically start a new run, check out the metal of your mercs, and discern if you should rather go die and start a new run with potentially better abilities for your mercenaries.
Good luck everyone! Happy Hunting!
EDIT:
According to belgianplayer1, they scored a Silver Rating of 221,618 which could very well mean the threshold for Gold is 225,000. If anyone finds this to be inaccurate, then please don't hesitate to post your times and scores in the comments below!
For one I played on Gravewalker difficulty which if you get hit twice by even the grunts your run is a wipe.
But yet on my second attempt on it I managed to get 500745 as my score and it took me between 1H and 1H 20Mins. This is for tips on how to complete it on Gravewalker difficulty.
Heal everytime your health is below three quarters.
On your first run collect all of Torvin's items and return them (these are incredibly useful and you get an achievement)
Try to kill everything from a distance and stealthily unless the Captains traits force you to fight head on. My strategy was flying above the Captains, stealth attacking from above then getting out of there as fast as possible but had to regularly improvise.
If there are a few captains bunched together shoot in the middle of them with a poison bomb then shoot a fire bomb, this causes Balefire which is devastating.
Put epic mercs down as outpost leaders because in the final assault common mercs die before getting inside the gates.
For upgrades:
1. The one that allows you to see Outpost Captain's traits.
2. The one that allows you to see normal Captain's traits.
3. All four of the healing upgrades.
4. It doesn't really matter from here but I suggest the bolt or bomb upgrades.
Constantly check for captains immunities and vulnerabilities, if one is immune to arrows but vulnerable to stealth its wise to stealth attack them and if you have full might when you land, use your combat execution on them or a a vulnerable captain then spam the A button to jump over the grunts heads until you find a place to latch onto and escape, then reset and do it again until they're dead or you've captured the outpost.
I only had one bodyguard and he was legendary which I bought just before the assault, activate him once in the final room where you face the overlord as this will really help.
I didn't kill any of the Warcheifs before commencing the assault so was forced to kill all four catapult graugs (which needed to be taken out quickly) and the captive drake. Your mercs should clean up the enemy Warcheifs so just swoop in for an easy kill or taking one of their defense points.
For items make sure to check them before activating them as one halves your health which on Gravewalker is a death sentence. But make sure to constantly update your items.
When in a 1 on 1 with a captain (this applies for the overlord) use your chain to reel them in to you then when they're down ground execute them, rinse and repeat until you have enough might to do a combat execution, then continue until they're dead, this way you shouldnt take any damage and should clean them up quite quickly.
Really handy trick by Place of Power: "When your about to die while in the kneeling position you can dashboard/quit game and it'll be like nothing happened, the map will still be blue. While I was about to die while kneeling in the overlord room I quit the game immediately and it only took me back to the start of the siege... the map was still conquered and I got my gold rating."
Goodluck guys and I hope this helps.

Edit 2: was asked for extra tips so added them in here too.
Edit 3: I was given a really handy trick by Place of Power to add in here.
Got 289268 Points.
Starting the run I took the outpost on the bottom left. Bombing the living daylights out of anything that wasn't human. Taking this outpost gives you two skill upgrades and some cash. Put those 2 skill points into your merc discount and buy yourself a top tier bodyguard... shop around, look at the stats and see whos going to cause the most damage.
Don't stress about manning the outpost, like a dodgy pyramid scheme the funds from the second outpost are going to flow back to manning the first. Buy the cheap guys, they will be fine. This outpost will provide an additional upgrade which is going on the final merc discount which will make these bargain mercs even cheaper.
As you move around the outpost from this point keep upgrading bodyguard slots and hiring top tier guards, them summon those buggers at every outpost, between them smashing the place up and you spamming fire shield and bombing the cluster everyone is on fire, poisoned, and being shot with arrows or pummelled depending on your mercs.
After this follow your upgrades as they suit. I didn't worry too much about the rally skill instead getting the Intel on outpost, then max health, then maxing placing bombs on the gate for the last fort which pushes your troops through the fort causing chaos.
Restock on the fallen bodies whenever you see them.
When you enter the last room for the finale, bomb the hell out of the orcs on the stairs then get to work on the main while your brother mops up the stragglers. If your bodyguards are keen to party I assume they'll be of use though I didn't find it necessary.
Bombing the orcs on the stairs gives you a combo execution. The main is damaged and scared of executions which creates a stun lock so just beat him, execute, beat, execute, QTE and congrats!
Good luck!!!

Prior to the run, complete the other trophies by playing the main story and obtaining all the Torvin updates. These are carried over and you won't need to do them again on your second run. Your skills and mercenaries are reseted though.
On your second run quickly go through the outposts in a cyclic manner. Your mercenaries are the key here since they will do the most of the job. First unlock the bodyguard skills in order to obtain three bodyguards. You need to assign mercenaries to the outposts. I used the cheap ones on the outposts and tried to purchase the best ones for my bodyguards. You can swap them later so don't worry too much about buying the best at the beginning.
Here is a little exploit that fairly speeds up the fights: Keep launching your zip line to a higher point and attack on the captains from the top. They quickly die this way, especially when you have lots of stealth damage augmentation.
After the outposts, directly attack on the fortress without wasting your time on the warchiefs. I entered the final fight without my bodyguards, guess you need to dismiss them prior to the entry. All you need in the final fight is combat executions.
The skills you should open first are mercenary and health pack upgrades. Then I preferred the ones that will help me attacking the castle and finally the ones with the rally skill.
Note: I'm pretty sure the timer stops when you pause the game, my run took at least half an hour longer than my final score.
Play on NEMESIS difficulty for the multiplier.
First take the outposts, I went Northeast, then counter-clockwise. Upgraded reduced mercenary cost 3x first. Assign the cheapest possible mercenaries to each outpost you take, doesn't matter as long as there is a merc there it won't get re-taken.
As you take the outposts upgrade so that you can have 3 Bodyguards, they are Captain killing machines. After bodyguard upgrades I just focused on Health Elixirs and then the upgrades for Serka that let you blow open all the gates, then Bolts.
Once you have all the Outposts you can weaken the fort by killing Warchiefs or just assault it. With 3 Legendary Bodyguards all I did was kill 1 Warchief and then started the quest to assault, and won.
Combat tips: I just grapple and glide around and stealth attack the Captains/Warchiefs, most can be killed in 1-3 stealth hits. Becomes even easier once you have a bodyguard or 3. I don't engage in direct combat much at all, if any. The final "boss" of the Fortress is kind of a joke....use one execute on him and he is dazed for the whole fight and you can just punch his face off basically. Finished with a time of 36 minutes and over 400K points, giving you lots of wiggle room.
To get a gold rating you must capture all 5 outposts and conquer the fortress as quickly as possible and score at least 225,000 points. This may sound daunting and it does rely on a bit of luck, as well as skill to achieve.
Recommended Skills:
- Logistics x3 - Grants a 30% discount for hiring Mercs
- Honor Guards x1/2 - Grants additional bodyguard assignment slots
- Sabotage Inner Gate - Puts explosives at the front gate during the siege so you can breach it easily
General tips and advice:
- Play on Nemesis as the gold rating is virtually impossible below this difficulty because there isn't a x2 point multiplier, don't bother with Gravewalker either as it's very difficult and will cause a lot of frustration.
- Get the Honor Guard skills ASAP, combat is hard at first as you will feel under-powered, once you have 2-3 bodyguards it becomes easier. Alternate between these skills and then increase health pack capacity.
- Kill white arrow enemies for augments, but don't go massively out of your way for them though so you don't waste time, with the bronze augment you may get some very powerful drops early on.
- Don't assign mercs to outposts until you have at least 2 bodyguards, get one with the 'balefire' trait as this is extremely powerful, get the discount skills if you are struggling to afford any.
- You can prevent your outposts from being captured by rotating your mercs between them to reset the timer, saving a lot of time by not having to defend or re-take them.
- Don't bother drawing out warchiefs as this takes up too much time, with 2 or 3 epic/legendary bodyguards you will have little trouble fighting them during the siege.
- Make use of your bombs and elemental bolts, firing these in to a crowd with captains/warchiefs is quite effective, especially if you have a bodyguard with the 'balefire' trait.
- Try and assign an epic merc with the trait that increases hired merc damage by 50%, with this they will decimate warchiefs during the siege.
- Backup your save to a USB or the PS+ cloud regularly in case you make a mistake or die.
Here is a screenshot of my final results.
Try and aim for a time of an hour or less, there is some leeway but anything over 1 hour and 20 minutes will be pushing it, remember to utilise backups and try to arrive at the siege at around 40-50 minutes time. You can keep your distance and let your hired mercs do most of the work during the siege especially if they are legendary and epic. Don't worry about the Overlord; he's very easy to kill as he fears executions, so just use one on him and he will be dazed.
If you are struggling, nekov4egop has created a thread with an excellent video and text guide, getting a very high score with a lot of room for error.
Baranor the Conqueror Text/Video Guide
To unlock this achievement you need to beat this DLC with a Gold rating. You will be given a rating of either Bronze, Silver, Gold or Mithril and your score is determined by the difficulty you play on, the time you take to complete it and the Outposts you capture. This cannot be done on anything less than Nemesis difficulty as that's the lowest difficulty you can do to get a multiplier bonus for difficulty. You will also need to effectively speedrun to have the shortest time possible, aiming for between one hour and one and a half hours. My first run took me over two hours and my multiplier from that was x10 and it simply wasn't enough. My difficulty was only easy and had no multiplier, so with that in mine I got 39,000 and a bronze rating.
My gold rated run I played on Nemesis difficulty and completed it in one hour and twenty eight minutes and got a x2 multiplier for the difficulty and x17 for the time I took and my overall score was 279139 which earned a gold. There is nowhere in the game that shows the required score for each rating but the general consensus online seems to be 225000 is the required score for a gold rating.
My successful run of this included three story missions since I died half way through a previous run and your story progress remains, so I could have cut out a substantial amount of time if I had completed it first, so that is an option, doing this on a second run after completing it first on easy to acclimatize yourself to the mechanics, since after you have completed it all of your story progress saves and when you begin a new run all you need to do is take over the outposts and then take the main fortress which is much quicker to do without story missions.
As for upgrades I first focussed on buying the mercenary discount upgrades so I could hire mercenaries for cheaper, then I unlocked the extra spaces for more bodyguards, then the extra spaces for healing items. Any other points I put arbitrarily into skills I didn't care for, such as extra steel bolts.
As for mercenaries, hire the cheapest ones for outpost guards and only hire the Legendary ones as your bodyguards, they are very powerful and can do most of the work for you. I had one of my mercenaries kill three captains within ten seconds during an encounter so they are definitely worthwhile.
I also took out three of the warchiefs before attempting the final assault and this turned out to be a good call since even with only three remaining most of my forces were wiped out during the assault and I only just scraped through until the final fight with the overlord.
As for that final fight, it is much easier than you would expect. I did three runs of this DLC in total and in all thee the overlord was the same with the same weaknesses. I just hit to stun him, hit him until my wrath filled up then did an execution on him, then repeated until i killed him, so presumably he is a set overlord and the same for everyone else.
1. Started the DLC on easy difficulty, collected all the upgrades and completed all the main missions. At the end, when you fight in the castle and finish off the commander, go to the settings and switch the difficulty to Nemesis . Afterwards, we finish off the commander and start again (you will be offered to do this, saving all the improvements).
2. I immediately bought the cheapest soldier and made him a Bodyguard.
3. Completed 2 additional missions on the map and killed the captains there. (Needed for experience to buy skills).
4. We pump up the maximum discount on soldiers and buy legendary ones as bodyguards.
5. We capture all 5 Outposts and buy the cheapest soldiers for protection, the ones you bought at the beginning can also be shoved into defense.
6. We go to capture the fortress.
By skills:
1. “Blood for coins” to the maximum (we get 50% savings on the purchase of mercenaries).
2. “Bodyguard” to maximum (and set only Legendary ones as bodyguards).
3. “Bombardier’s bag” to the maximum (an ideal bunch of poison bombs and fire immediately after).
4. Here it’s either health or arrows, who needs what more, I downloaded arrows and only then treatment.
PS
I didn’t try sabotage on the walls, it works with bombs and Bodyguards with a bang.
Before the start of the final battle, all the Legendaries and all the cheapest mercenaries were bought up.
Be sure to place all the “Items” that drop from captains and some orcs, they can make your life a lot easier.
Completed in 41min. and 52sec. with 373,904 thousand points.
