How to unlock the It Came From Within achievement in Middle-earth: Shadow of War - Definitive Guide

It Came From Within Achievement/Trophy Guide

Step 1: During Act 2 you will meet Bruz who will teach you how the domination ability works and how you can take over other captains minds to use them in your army. Once this has been taught, go out and kill OR recruit the 2 warchiefs of this area. I recommend just killing them.

Step 2: Once they are dead you need to recruit some captains and then in the nemesis menu, command them by selecting cn_Y and hover over the dead warchief and select Infiltrate. This will now start up a new side mission called Infiltration.

Step 3: Head to the event and watch your captain fight another for the spot of spy.

Step 4: Now the warchiefs spots have been filled with your captains, start the assault on the fortress and the achievement/trophy will unlock instantly.

Here is a video of me doing it.

I did this and it didn't unlock. A glitch in the system you think?

This would be a lot easier if bodyguards got promoted to warchief, like in the first game. Now the warchiefs just die and your guys do nothing.

I did mine after taking the fortress in Bruz's area, in Cirth Ungol... There was 3 war chief spots, and replaced them all with spies, and took the fortress... No unlock :(

Would this be classed missable if you have already captured all forts

Is this missable if you’ve completed the shadow wars?

For anyone who missed this achievement during the story and hasn't finished the shadow wars, if you lose a fort you can get this achievement using the method above. Experimented with it today and it worked perfectly

Thank you! I didn't know I had to spy a dead warchief, I was wondering why it wasn't a bodyguard who was promoted to Warchief like in Shadow of Mordor...

This achievement proved to be the biggest SOB so far for me. I lost the fortress in Gorgoroth during shadow wars and decided to go ahead and get this done. I had to infiltrate 6 warchief spots starting from scratch as I only had my previous warchief and another captain left after losing the fort. (Both of which were pretty underleveled now). I decided to kill the warchiefs and dominate their bodyguards which gave me 12 captains. At this point I was pretty confident this was going to be a breeze. The infiltration missions is where it got ridiculous though. Even though all of the captains I used had high levels, they were always paired up against someone who was higher level, or the same level with good support. I was even unlucky enough to have one of my captains lose to an enemy that was no joke 15 levels under him. At this point I just decided to go around and shame all the captains until they were low enough level that all of my captains could beat them easily. I even went out of my way to upgrade all my captains support and get them to my level just to be sure they would win. This took me around 3 hours and I was worried that after all of this the achievement wouldn’t unlock properly so I went ahead and power cycled my Xbox just to be sure.

This achievement is potentially missable, though there is ample opportunity to unlock it.

To unlock this achievement you need to turn all of the Warchiefs of a fortress into spies and then attack it. You do this by doing the mission that is attached to each of the Warchiefs and when given the opportunity dominate the Warchief and have them become a spy inside the fortress. This needs to be every Warchief of the fortress turned into a spy, if you kill one of them it won't work unless you then replace the dead Warchief with one of your followers, so you have to start the conquest with every Warchief spot filled with one of your followers.

The first opportunity to do this is during one of Bruz's early missions where you need to take the fortress in Cirith Ungol. I would recommend doing this straight away to avoid potentially missing it. It is missable in that there are only a certain amount of conquests during the game. There is one for each of the four fortresses you conquer, then during the Shadow Wars during the post game you can intentionally lose a defence and then have to take the fortress back, giving you another opportunity to unlock this, but you can only do this twice for each Shadow war, your third attempt at re-taking a fortress will just be you vs. the new Overlord until you beat them. There are ten Shadow War missions available so this adds twenty potential opportunities to unlock this achievement.

So while it's highly unlikely you will miss it, it is possible to miss or at least make it more protracted than it needs to be if you don't get it during one of the first four conquests to take the fortresses for the first time in each region.

Missable!

As part of the main quest you will be conquering fortresses; if you don't attempt this before finishing Act 4 your forts can't be retaken, making this missable.

Every region's fortress has Warchiefs assigned to it, often multiple. For this trophy you need to play the missions that draw out each of the Warchiefs and dominate them, once you have done this that captain will no longer be a warchief.

Go into the army screen and command any of your captains with and press over an open Warchief spot to infiltrate it. Complete the resulting infiltration mission and your orc will become a Warchief. You only need a single Warchief to occupy a spot as long as all of the others are empty. I recommend attempting this in Nurnen as that fortress only has 2 Warchiefs you need to dispose of, start the conquest having done this and the trophy will unlock straight away.

It's easiest at the first fortresses, where there are only two leaders. You brand them, send them back as spies and run dry to the ruler.

Also, if you accidentally killed all the leaders, it doesn’t matter. You can send your captains to the places of the former leaders. Only before this, the captains must win in the PIT. And it is not necessary, as has already been written, for there to be leaders in all places. I had 2 out of 4, and the rest were empty. Before the attack on the fortress, they gave us a trophy.

The trophy requires attention, but can be obtained without any problems at the first fortress in the second act.

I killed both initial leaders by mistake (one of them - while knocking out the operative trophy). I chose a stronger recruited captain and ordered him to take the place of one of the leaders. This started the quest with the pit. I came to the pit, watched as my orc butchered some random After this, my orc took the indicated place of the leader and repeated the procedure 2 times.

That is, at the beginning of the assault, all the positions of the leaders were occupied by my supporters and the leader had little chance. At the moment the assault began, the trophy fell out.

You can have one of your leaders, and stupidly kill the rest; they will be counted if their places remain empty at the time of capture.

Patch 1.18.
Just in case, I'll add a clarification.
I did this:
1) When attacking the leader, I did not kill him, but recruited him.
2) After this, the leader leaves his place in the “Fortress” and stands in the area near the fortress.
3) Then he selected him, pressed “Give order” and pointed to his old place.
4) After winning the pit, he becomes the CHIEF SPY. (and we do this with every leader)

PS one of them was of too high a level, I disgraced him, then I recruited him, but he betrayed me and my comrades hacked him to death. => I think it is not necessary to put exactly the same leader in his place because I put another one and got the trophy

Patch 1.18. The examples described above did not help me; I put my own in the place of the dead leaders, first sending them to the fighting pits, and only after all the places were occupied (in my case 5) did I go for the assault.
