How to unlock the Shadows of the Sand achievement in Middle-earth: Shadow of War - Definitive Guide
Huge tip for others!!!
In Derth, check out the captain FIRST before even touching any of the grunts!!!!! On the first time I tried this, I found out after I killed every grunt that my damn captain was ARROW-PROOF!!! But you can "re-roll" your captain to what you want!!! Just keep restarting the mission till your captain is SOFT TARGET, makes this SO much easier!!!
To unlock this achievement you need to earn a gold rating in all six of the Shadows of the past missions. You access these by loading up your main game save and going to the new region of Lithlad on the far right of the world map. Each of the missions has two bonus objectives that you need to complete to earn gold. Below I will detail the mission and it's objectives and any tips that may be necessary.
-
Darthad
- Bronze: Kill 20 Uruks with Glaive attacks
- Silver: Freeze 3 enemies with a single Shower of Ice
- Gold: Set 9 frozen Uruks on fire
You will be on the roof of the Keep and within the immediate area there are a few grog barrels that you can shoot to explode, but be sure not to waste them. First build up your hitstreak by attack enemies with normal attacks, then when it is around fifteen to twenty try to line some enemies up and press to use Shower of Ice and hope that three or more enemies are frozen by it. Keep repeating this until you get three. Next you're going to want to use this same tactic but in close proximity to the grog barrels then when you have three to four frozen enemies near one, shoot it to cause an explosion and set the frozen enemies on fire. Once you have completed these two objectives, proceed to complete the main objective.

Derth
- Bronze: Clear the camp
- Silver: Hit 8 Uruks with a headshot
- Gold: Avoid getting hit
For this you will need to clear a camp of enemies including a Captain. Keep your distance while remaining undetected and take every enemy out with a headshot to be sure you get the required eight, then when you're just left with the Captain, again from a distance shoot him two to three times then he will teleport, so drop to the edge of the building where he can't see you and let your focus replenish, then jump back up and quickly shoot him two to three times again until he teleports. Repeat until he is dead.

Indreth
- Bronze: Combat execute the Captain without being detected
- Silver: Kill 4 Uruks in a single wraith chain, 3 times
- Gold: Stealth kill 3 Caragors
When you start, jump straight forward and kill the first sole enemy, then straight away go forward to find four enemies that you can get your first wraith chain on. Then go slightly backwards to find a Caragor drinking from the water and stealth kill it, then further back from there another sole enemy and a Caragor that will walk past him, try to get to the tall grass next to this enemy as soon as you can, then wait for the Caragor to walk past him, kill him then kill the Caragor. Now head further into the camp just past the first four enemies to find another group of four and wraith chain them, then just beside them another Caragor roams near the tall grass, so kill this for your final Caragor. Now use your Wraith vision to find a line of four enemies that patrol at the edge of the camp and at the opportune moment, stealth attack the one at the back and Wraith chain them for your final Wraith chain kills, now go to the Captain and press and to combat execute him and finish the mission.

Breged
- Bronze: Reach the top of the Mesa
- Silver: Trigger fewer than 5 mines
- Gold: Don't get hit
This is by far the hardest mission to get gold on but it is manageable. First you want to grab the arrows at the start, then shoot the first mine as you cannot pass it otherwise. For the rest of the mission you want to wait and watch the boulders as they fall and when you figure out their pattern move past them. Use the wraith vision to see the outline for the mines to avoid them and you can also aim your bow with and manipulate the games slow motion to move through the areas where the boulders fall.

Tur
- Bronze: Defeat the 2 Captains
- Silver: Kill 7 Orcs in Bird of Prey after using Eagle's Eyrie
- Gold: Hit 5 Orcs with a single Talon Strike
You will just be in a small camp surrounded by enemies here and I would suggest doing the five hits with Talon Strike first. You will want to be noticed so everyone is after you then try to kite at least five enemies together, then climb up something, jump off and press mid-air, then aim at the floor in the middle of at least five enemies and press to Talon Strike. After this you need to vault over an enemy then quickly press to use the Bird of Prey skill and quickly kill Orcs until you have killed seven of them like this, then simply defeat the two Captains however you see fit to complete the mission.

Torthad
- Bronze: Clear the camp without Celebrimbor taking damage
- Silver: Shoot 8 bait
- Gold: Kill 20 Orcs while mounted
You start this mission mounted on a Caragor and you have to clear the camp of enemies while completing the secondary objectives. You can't be hit if you dismount your Caragor or if it's killed underneath you, you have to immediately mount something else, or else just don't get hit. What I did was to stay at a distance and try to kill as many enemies as I could with my bow without alerting the camp. If you get surrounded your Caragor will die very quickly, so try to get above fifteen of the twenty needed kills from your Caragor at least. Once you have your twenty kills, activate Wraith vision with and find eight different baits to shoot. Now you have to clear out the remaining enemies, however there will now be an abundance of beasts in the camp that will attack you, including a Graug and a Drake. You can head back to the beginning of the camp and wait there and the Drake and other beasts will finish off the remaining enemies, completing the mission.
Derth - 0/8 Hit Uruks with Headshots, Avoid getting Hit
Torthad - 0/8 Shoot Bait, 0/20 Kill orcs while Mounted on Beasts (I recommend using skills Pounce and Shadow Mount)
Breged - 0/5 Trigger Fewer than 5 Mines, Don't Get Hit
Indreth - 0/3 Kill 4 Uruks with a single Wraith Chain, 0/3 Stealth Kill Caragors
Tur - 0/7 Kill Orcs in Bird of Prey after using Eagle's Eye, 0/5 Hit 5 Orcs with a single Talon Strike
Darthad - Freeze 4 Uruks with a single Shower of Ice, 0/9 Set frozen Uruks on fire (I recommend using skills Firestorm/Cleansing Blaze, Freeze Blast/Winter's Breath, Deadly Striker)
The only one you might struggle with is Breged, as it requires good timing and taking the optimal path through the cave, refer to this video from Uruk's Hollow.
