How to unlock the Long Live the Bird achievement in Midway Arcade Origins - Definitive Guide

After spoke to KTILLA23 on XBL regarding of Joust 2 that we both had a trouble with. Gave him the tip that would help him a higher chance to reach Wave 5, confirmed that it worked, and thanked me for it. Now, I feel that its time to give you guys a strategy after unlocked this achievement in my 3rd attempt this morning.

Most people would have no problem with this game until they get to the part with Wave 3 but I'll get that to it later. I have never played Joust 2 before until yesterday but this should give you no trouble if you pick this game up and figure it out in no time.

You have 3 things you can do in Joust 2: Jump on enemies, won't work on Pterodactyl, stab them with a joust, and a transformed yellow beast look like Pegasus. Your goal is stomp, stab enemies and collect green eggs fast as possible. When you stomp a green enemy, it will laid a egg on the ground however if you leave the egg too long to collect, it will cracked and a blue knight will appear. A bird will find it's owner and will back to a slight bigger and faster than the previous red knoght one. If the egg dropped to the lava, it will give a life, same apply to above sentence. Second time, an egg dropped to the lava, it will die.

Wave 1- Stay on the top platform on the left, stomp on the green enemy on the opposite down of you. Now, wait for 1-2 enemies will try to get top of the platform where you will be. Stomp them in the mid air. If its 1-2 left. Finish them and collect green eggs.

Wave 2- Again, same strategy as above but this time you will more likely see a yellow egg depends on wave 1 or 2. You can stomp on the grey square (score, zap them, or a bonus life). I wouldn't do that if I were you. Leave it alone until you have 1 enemy left but more over, you would get killed if in hurried or slipped into the lava.

Wave 3- This one got me the trouble the most, pain in the butt. Now, what you need to do is as soon as the wave start, quickly drop yourself to the bottom of the platform and stay in the middle. You will see a new enemy, a huge red flying beast. I'll call her the Hell Mother. Now the Hell Mother will drop the eggs and disappeared for a few seconds. If you don't get her killed quickly, she will laid more eggs which means more green enemies. Don't worry about it because she will come to you. Stomp on her when you have a chance, either on the bottom of the platform or take an advantage after your death, your spawn will be either top or second platform. Sometime after your spawn, you will run into the Hell Mother, stab her and she will die. If you see Pterodactyl, ignore him. He do nothing but distracted you. Especially if you have 1 or 2 green eggs to collect, he will disappears.

Wave 4- By the time you reached Wave 4, you should have 4-5 lives left. This is a bit easier than previous wave. Go to the ground and stay underneath the pointy edge on the right. Transform to a Pegasus. All you need to do is stab red bats on either of the sides. Once all red bats gone, transform back to the normal one, stomp on green enemies ONLY if they are in higher grounds. If they are in your way, use a Pegasus again and stab them in front. Don't bother to stomp them if using a Pegasus. After the wave 4 cleared, you will move up to wave 5 and the achievement unlocked.

Note: You can transform a Pegasus or a normal one at anytime in any waves however Wave 4 is your best bet on using a Pegasus. You could use a Pegasus in Wave 3 but it's a bit tricker and too many enemies. You could die if an enemy stab you in the back. So my advise is best use a Pegasus in Wave 4.

Hope this help and please leave a comment. Positive vote would be appreciated. If bad vote, please leave a comment and tell me why. I'll be gladly to add any more tips that I don't know and add to your credit to this guide. Thank you.

Yep, IMO this achievement is harder than any achievements besides Reality Show Off achievement (smash tv). It takes a lot of lucks and patienece to keep trying to practice and memorize it.

Man, this is going to take forever. The controls are terrible in this game. You have to account for the speed you're going when changing directions.

Thanks for the guide. I would add it's important to take your time and not rush it too much. I was having some trouble and found a good video guide which was published in 2022, which you might like to add. Not mine though! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SM8ybFgEIgc

Yeah this was definitely horrible, but the trick is as someone pointed out already, on stage 3 you need to take out the big red guy straight away by hovering just under a platform. I got lucky and managed to go in to stage 4 with full lives after many attempts

imagine going to work, creating this war crime of a video game, and then going home feeling accomplished for yourself

Oh, Joust 2 achievement is one of the fewest achievements grained in my head forever for an obvious reason. 🙄

The biggest problem with Joust 2 is the game mechanic of controlling your joust due of not cooperating with the control of hectic and unpredictable speed. Terrible...hmm, I can related to that nowadays but back in 1980’s, no.

The 80’s video games/arcade developers did this on a purpose that due of testing your dexterity, eyes-hands coordinating, and memorizing. They are very NOTORIOUS for that!

70’s-80’s kids like me, it takes ALOT of trial and error, must have endurance patience, extremely high dexterity and eyes-hands coordinating skills. However, depends on your patience and keep trying as further you will every now and then. I promise you, you will get it!

Forever, no. You only need to advance first 4 waves. Fortunately, they do not take that long. It will go quick after you memorized it overtime and know which enemies to hit quick as possible. Just keep your mind to stay calm, don’t fight with your controller and trust yourself. Just 4 waves then you are free! Good luck, SincereSeeker.

Awesome! Glad you got it! Use my guide if you need help with Smash TV achievement..Remember, the glitch for Smash TV is a hit and miss so keep trying. Use my shortest route direction to Mutatiod boss. It’s more quicker and easiest to get there without giving you a trouble. Good luck!

Unfortunately there's no easy way to get this trophy but here are some small tips:

Wave 1: Stay on the top platform and wait for the birds to come to you.

Wave 2: Again stay on the top and wait for them to come to you. You can kill one spawning enemy right away too.

Wave 3: This one relies somewhat on RNG. Immediately fly straight up at the start and hover there until the egg dropping monster comes under you and bop it. Then try your best to kill all the birds. I'd recommend the middle platform but some people say the bottom platform works well too. If you take too long the Pterodactyl will spawn and become a huge problem so don't dawdle.

Wave 4: Stay on the bottom platform and transform into Pegasus. You need to hit the bats while facing forward. If you die and spawn at the top then switch back to your bird form and take out the red knighted birds then concentrate on the bats. Again this one is somewhat RNG but as long as you know to use Pegasus and face toward the bats you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Apart from all that just keep practicing. It's honestly 50% luck and 50% skill and took me over 2 hours of retrying. Good luck.

Now comes a much more challenging trophy. Much more so than the first Joust. All you have to do is REACH Wave 5, not complete it. So, once you beat Wave 4 your trophy will pop shortly after.

For the first two waves, stay up high and let the enemies come to you. When you defeat each one, make sure to grab the eggs they leave behind. If you wait too long, they will respawn as Blue Knights - which are significantly more difficult than their original form. Try to get through the first 2 waves with minimal loss of lives. Wave 3 is where it gets tough.

As soon as Wave 3 starts, get to the bottom and wait for baddies to get by you and give 'em the old Ostrich Stomp. If the eggs fall into the lava, they automatically respawn into Blue Knights. If the egg goes in a second time, they are finished. Your biggest problem will be the big red guy. He's fast and can disappear. Try to take him out ASAP as he can spawn more baddies. Once you have defeated them all it's onto Wave 4.

As soon as Wave 4 starts, head down and change to the Pegasus. Stay here and take out the enormous amount of bats. Once you feel comfortable enough, venture out and get the remaining Evil Knights. When they are all defeated you are done! Congrats - it isn't easy.

This is one of the harder ones. Aphrodite1 had this to say as a tip.

"Level 3 - You start in the middle of the screen. I flew upwards and hovered under the platform above on the far left edge and waited for that red thing to appear and move to under me. Then drop on it and kill it off first. After that there isn't much strategy other than try and stay high up under the ledges on the middle and bottom platforms and drop down on them when you can. I used the Pegasus button sometimes to drop on them. I never bothered with the very top of the level. You get killed too easy up there.

Level 4 - Move to the right and park yourself midway under the ledge above. Transform into Pegasus and try and waste as many red birds as you can there by hopping up a bit. The Pegasus form is shit at jumping. I never really lasted that long but if you can take out maybe 4 or 5 that's good. Now you want to get to the top ledge if you can. After getting killed I would often spawn up there or very close to it. Get to the top ledge and drop down the gap as Pegasus and fly back up again over and over when enemies appear below."

You need only reach wave 5 for the achievement to unlock.
