How to unlock the Ride the Wave achievement in Midway Arcade Origins - Definitive Guide

After many attempts I finally got it by doing this:

Default controls
Every time the river has land in the middle I stayed left. If I went right of an island once the ach didn't pop.

The ach popped as I crossed into the second river.

Edit: It seems you have to be ahead of the AI when the river splits or you will be forced to go the way they went.

You got the down vote because people are tools. My friend said your method worked and I'm going to try it now. Thanks in advance.

I thought this achievement was a lot harder than it was. I made it into the "Indian" river, then the "Swamp" river and never got the achievement. When I finally made it I went from the starting river to the "Indian" one then it popped. Just a heads up to everyone trying to get this...just give it time it might be glitched.

Adding a comment here because the other solutions didn't show on a mobile device. For the achievement description "sinking" means taking ANY hits. It's not enough to beat the level without running out of lives (and seeing the sinking animation), you have to do it without taking any damage (seeing the swirl animation).

Completing the level without taking any hits is not significantly harder than beating the level once you've gotten the path figured out.

I'm amazed no one has mentioned this, but it should be noted that you have to get through the first level without taking a hit, not just getting sunk. If I took a hit, the achievement didn't unlock, but if I went hitless, it finally popped.

There's a problem with the whole "going left" thing, sometimes the AI will go right and force you that way and trying to go back won't work.

I notice that if you trail the way down those left/right sections, you will be forced the way the AI goes. Make sure you lead through those sections.

Just finish the first level in the game without hitting any of the obstacles. It sounds easy but can present a challenge...but practice will be valuable, as everything is in a static location and doesn't change from game to game.

Things to avoid:

-Branches
-Fishermen
-Fallen trees
-Falling rocks
-Treasure (unless you want the points, but they won't help you really get the achievement)

You can run across the rocks, they'll only slow you down. Bumping the edges is ok, too.I've found that a good tactic here is to let the AI controlled player take the lead once you drop down the second waterfall. If they hit the fallen trees, it'll remove them from the playing field. They'll run out of lives eventually, but any help here is appreciated.

When the trees fall, if you hang back long enough, you pass easily close to the shoreline.

Cans can destroy some obstacles, but I personally found it easiest to avoid everything, as it helps keep you focused on what's coming up.

Just take it semi-slow and steady, and avoid mashing the buttons to avoid obstacles as much as possible, as it almost always ends in losing a life. Just don't stall too much, as the alligator will come after you if you hang about.

It should pop as soon as it switches to the next river. Be certain you're playing in Score Attack mode... It should pop with no issues.

Didn't get hit on score attack...crossed into America still no plink. Might have to try it with default controls, I have the throw on rb instead of lb. I'll keep plugging away at it. Thank u for quick response. :)

Sure thing. I'd definitely try default settings. I wouldn't think it'd make a difference, but then again, this is kinda like tournament play, so maybe it does.

Edit: Figured it out, you have to stay to the left with all three river path branches off. The achievement pops when you enter the Amazon. If you take the right paths it doesn't register. Thanks for all the help Oobgarm!

How do you avoid the crocodile?

Don't take too much time and he'll never appear. I never dealt with him, so I can't offer any insight other than that.

You can repel the crocodile by throwing a can at him. You have you spin around rather quickly, though.

This HAS to be the most bullshit achievement in the game. No matter how fast I go through the level that crocodile always shows up and kills me. Plus this other tuber just constantly keeps hitting me into objects. I don't understand how his tube hits me and I go flying across the map, but when I ram him it does nothing. On top of that, every time the river paths he goes down the right side which pulls me down that way.

Nevermind. For those that come after me, the cheeve pops as soon as you enter the wooded area - I just had been hit before I got there before. You'll know you've entered a new area, because if your AI "buddy" was dead, he'll resurface as you enter the new area.

For the crocodile, I found that if your buddy was still alive and behind you, then he'd get eaten. Like the old saw about not needing to outrun the bear; just your buddy.

soo... when does the colorado end? Is there an obvious "you've finished this level"? I've gotten to where there's some dart blower guy on the right and even into the sludge that pours out from the left and right, but I'm not sure where I'm supposed to be getting to.

This is a very good guide but where does the achievement pop? I made it through Colorado then the Amazon without hitting any obstacles. Is there a finish line or island I'm missing?

I cannot stress enough how much easier this is if you use the d-pad to move, also try mapping the "throw" button to A, that way its easy to move around, and use A to throw cans to get rid of any obstacle and its so much easier. As said in other solutions stay left and move at a steady pace, DO NOT hang back as the crocodiles will creep up and ruin it for you.

Hope this helps.

I actually found it easier to map the forward buttons to the triggers and the backward buttons to the bumpers, but still mapped Throw to A, the movement on the d-pad wasn't tricky, but I just found for myself my mapping made it easier for me.

Agreed with the above 100%, got it first try when I remapped forward to the triggers. Still +1 for suggesting to remap the controls and use the cans.

When I posted my comment last year, it was because I remember the machine in the arcade when I was younger, and they had the buttons mapped on the machine in a pentagram-style, where starting from the bottom, the Throw button was in the center, then above that the forward-paddling buttons (since you're advancing to the bottom of the screen), and the backward-paddling buttons at the top, so it just made sense to remap it on my controller to the bumpers and triggers.

For this, you have to make it through the whole first level of the class 1 rapids (Colorado) without sinking. The only advice I have is to take your time, don't worry about your opponent as he should sink before the end (and may spawn back after a while), and make sure to collect cans to throw at objects before the pop your tube.
It should be noted that if you try to enter the whirlpool (portal) to the next level that is near the start of Colorado, the trophy will NOT pop.

This game gave me trouble until I remapped the controls to make more sense to me, but play with what is comfortable for you. I used to turn left and to turn right and took my time.

Objects will appear randomly as you paddle your way down the river but just focus on working your way down and go slow, avoid any objects and you should get this after about a minute or two.

Here is yet another decent game RUINED by terrible controls. First and foremost, practice. The controls take a LONG time to get a handle of. But, once you have them down, this trophy is much easier than most people give it credit for.

As you Toob down Colorado, here is what I focused on to get it done very easily -

  • You cannot get hit at all for this trophy, so be on the defensive while going downriver.
  • Try to stay close behind your opponent. He will take out some obstacles for you.
  • Collect cans. You may need a few to deal with the logs.
  • When the first split comes up, go a little ahead of your opponent and, most importantly, STAY LEFT!!! (Left side of screen)
  • Don't be afraid to use cans on obstacles.
  • If the croc shows up, Toob away FAST!
  • Always stay left. It's the quickest route (should take 2-3 minutes) and some have reported it not popping the trophy if you go other ways.
  • Another "duh" tip - avoid the obstacles!

Once you get out of Colorado and start in a jungle, the trophy will pop.

There is an error in the trophy description. You need to complete the level without taking damage once.
