How to unlock the Tengu Friend achievement in MINI NINJAS - Definitive Guide

There are a total of 5 Tengu that need help, and they are listed by chapter name and what you need to do for them.

1) Leaving Home-Tengu in the village:
Destroy all samurai on other side of the bridge. Just kill all the samurai across the bridge and that's it. There are a total of 13 that need to be killed.

2) Leaving Home-Tengu near the Temple:
He wants a Burdock Flower. The Burdock Flower is right up the stairs near the temple, behind a few statues.

3) Haunted Forest-Tengu in the woods to the left of the main path from start:
He wants a Spear of Ashida. You should have one to spare so just hand it over to him.

4) Flooded Valley-Tengu near the start of the level:
He wants you to go to the temple and check on the Tengu there. Once you return, he gives you the sturdy rod, which will allow the giant Koi to drag you into the next area.

5) Winter Range-Tengu by the split in the path near the start:
He just wants a Tiger Lilly. Just hand one over and you're done.

The achievement unlocks right after doing this final task.

I agree with Amendocrem. You can go back and do this once you complete the game. You just need to make sure you complete the whole level instead of exiting early and then it will save for you.

For this achievement specifically, it takes about 90mins of straight rushing through every level, so it’s not terrible if the achievement glitched previously and you need you to start fresh.

The saving and quitting didn't work for me.
I had to replay from start, which takes about an hour if you rush it.
Safest bet is to plan for this and do them on your first run

Level: 2 - Leaving Home
Location: At the beginning of the level, as you enter the village, the Tengu will be on your right.
Quest: Kill all the samurai on the other side of the broken bridge.
Finish: Tengu will spawn to the other side of the bridge beside the animal cages.
Reward: Shurikens.

Level: 2 - Leaving Home
Location: Close to a checkpoint shortly after saving Suzume at the bottom of the Temple stairs.
Quest: He wants a Burdock Flower. There is one up the temple stairs between the first and second statues on the right
Finish: He will be in the same location.
Reward: Flask of Unstable Energy.

Level: 7 - Haunted Forest
Location: At the beginning of the level, follow along the left cliff and you will eventaully get to him.
Quest: He wants a Spear of Ashida. You should already have one but in case you do not, there is one on the ledge just above him. If you follow the left cliff, it should open up and that should lead you to the Spear of Ashida.
Finish: He will be in the same location.
Reward: Flask of Strange Brew.

Level: 11 - Flooded Valley
Location: At the beginning of the level, he will be right in front of the gate/doorway.
Quest: He wants you to find his uncle at the Temple. Just go to the Temple and talk to the Tengu there.
Finish: When you get back he should be standing right at the edge of the water.
Reward: Sturdy Rod.
**SUPER IMPORTANT!!! DO NOT REPLAY THIS LEVEL UNTIL YOU HAVE GOTTEN THIS ACHIEVEMENT! Since this game overwrites your playthrough when you replay levels, when you load this level again, the Tengu will not be there anymore and the game will think you did not do the quest and saves that over your first playthrough.

Level: 14 - Winter Range
Location: At the beginning of the level, he will be on the main path where the split path converge again.
Quest: He wants a Tiger Lily. You should have plenty of this by now, if not there is probably one around. I just talked to him because I had a lot.
Finish: He will be in the same location.
Reward: Cherry Bomb.

And thats that! Achievement should pop as soon as you finish the last quest.

Do exactly what Dave Jepson stated however i must warn you that this achievement in glitched. If you finish a level and have not finshed the tengu mission in the level then it will not count. Also if you replay the level then the saved information about the quest overall will be erased. So i suggest after beating the game delete your file and do a whole playthrough just for the tengu missions.

how do you know about the glitch?

I had missed the Tengu mission on level 7 "Haunted Forest", but had managed to collect all the missable achievements before coming back there an replaying it. I was absolutely terrified as the above solutions said that this wasn't possible as it was glitched.

Fortunately the moment I handed over a Spear of Ashida and completed his quest the achievement unlocked.

But I guess I was lucky. I've heard that this hasn't happened with other gamers and they needed a speed-run to get it.

So before deleting your SAVE FILE and trying again, it is worth perhaps visiting the missed Tengu and completing his mission. 'Hopefully' it wouldn't glitch just like it did with me.

I know about the glitch because i have friends that have been affected by it and have informed me about the situation. It is also posted on other sites that have a solution for the achievement and even the trophy itself for the PS3 so you can trust me that there is onw. Thus since Dave Jepson did not state that glitch i came to inform people about the situation

This is not 100% true. I'm not sure why it does or doesn't happen but I will leave a link that I think explained it well. I missed the very first quest somehow. I thought I killed all of the samurai but it never said I did. Anyways, I completed the rest of the game without replaying any levels until I was done. I made sure to do this first before I replayed any other levels. I just went back and replayed level 2 doing both Tengu quests and the achievement popped.

I realize it's PS3 trophies, but it was very helpful.

The Tengu are the bird-like characters in this game. All of their quests are really easy. Most of the Tengu are in plain sight. There are five total quests. Here are the levels where you can find them:

  • Leaving Home (two here)
  • Haunted Forest
  • Flooded Valley
  • Winter Range

Again, there are reports of a possible glitch whereby the Tengu fails to appear if you advance too far into a given level. I personally never encountered this problem.

Build up throuhout the game - Will unlock on Level 14 if done correctly

Missable & glitched achievement

There are 5 Tengu that will need your help, activating a mini-quest. Here's where to find them and what to do for them.

1) Level 2 "Leaving Home"
In the village where the burning bridge is, Tengu will ask you to kill al 13 samuari on the across the river. Kill them all and a message that you've completed Tengu's task should appear on your screen. Go back to Tengu and get your reward.

2) Level 2 "Leaving Home"
Right after you've opened the bamboo door to access a new area, you will find Tengu and he will ask you to get him a Burdock Flower. You can find one near the temple if you turn right.

3) Level 7 "Haunted Forest"
You can find Tengu in the woods left from the main path where you start, and he will ask you to get him a Spear of Ashida. It is possible you have a spare one from a previous level. If not, you can find one not so far from where Tengu is. A little right from Tengu is a path, which will bring you to higher ground. Go up there, there should be 3 fruit trees (one of them with a bee hive). Go passed the trees, and there you'll find one.

4) Level 11 "Flooded Valley"
You can find Tengu in the beginning of the level and wants you to go check if his uncle is still OK after the area has been flooded. His uncle is located on the far right of the map, only accessible using your hat as a boat. The temple where his uncle is located, is also one of the temples you need for the Sightseeing achievement. Go back to the first Tengu and you will be rewarded with a Sturdy fishing rod which you can use to have the Koi drag you to the 2nd part of the flooded area.

5) Level 14 "Winter Range"
You can find Tengu after the first split in the beginning of the level. All he wants is a Tiger Lilly to make bombs. You should have more than enough of them, so give him one.

WARNING!
a) If you miss any of the Tengu or can't fulfill their request on your first run through any level the game will glitch and you will never be able to get the achievement. Make sure if you start a level with a Tengu that you NEVER quit out, you MUST finish the level AND complete the Tengu quest in the same run.

b) If you replay any mission with a Tengu quest to go back and do something else you missed, (Example: Jizo Statues, Grinding out bow/spear/etc... kills) the game will glitch and will permanently wipe your Tengu quests to 0/5. Re-doing the Tengu quest will not count either as replaying the mission has already glitched your save.

There are a total of 5 Tengu tasks in the game, the tasks are simple: either bring some kind of plant (usually you may already have it) or go to the temple and return or kill n number of enemies. After completing the fifth task, you will receive an achievement.
