Should be cumulative even across lifes.
So after the Tree has takes damage during a tempest you can sacrificae a mage to repair it.
In later lifes you should have enough mages that sacrifies won't hur you much or sacrifie your mages and begin a new life to get it earlier if you prefer that.
Be aware that the whole game is buggy and seems to treat your first 2 Lifes like a tutorial without the ability to unlock achievements.
If you fulfill this condition during the tutorial you need to delete your save, redo the tutorial and do the condition again
