Seems cumulative during barriage events your garrison will be attacked, these are maked red in the event bar.
Upgrading the garrison makes it possible to station up to 3 mages there making it possible to prevent more damage, potions, artifacts and other bonusses help as well.
Should come naturally quite fast.
Be aware that the whole game is buggy and seems to treat your first 2 Lifes like a Tutorial without the ability to unlock achievements.
If you fulfill this condition during the totorial you need to delete your save, redo the Tutorial and do the condition again
