How to unlock the A Living Fossil achievement in MONSTER HUNTER: WORLD - Definitive Guide

Start an expedition to Rotten Vale Central Camp (11), which is available after unlocking five-star assignments. Once here, you'll want to go to Area 15, and you can find a small blue pond near the end of the trail. Look into this pond, and there is a random chance that a Petricanths will spawn, which is the living fossil fish that we are going after. it's a dark fish with glowing blue spots on it (seen on the video thumbnail).

If it spawns, take out your fishing rod and catch it. Mash cn_B the whole time you're reeling it in, and follow the on-screen directional presses as well. Once caught, the achievement will unlock. If you are having trouble with the fish, you can try using a Baitbug in order to make fishing a little easier.

If the fish does not spawn in this pond, you will want to fast travel back to Astera, and then start your expedition over again to see if it spawns in. Rinse and Repeat until it spawns.

I also just found this fish in the elder recess. I just got to this place for the firest time and it was in a huge body of water at a camp I haven't discovered yet. It was on the far left side of the water.
Update: eastern camp 8. Should save some time searching due to it being at the camp.

I jumped between Elder Recess (8) and Rotten Veil (11) until it finally spawned. Gave me a chance every time I went through a loading screen instead of going back to Astera.

I had problems getting it to bite so I wanted to get baitbugs from my chest. I walked back to 11 (not fast travel) and got them. When I came back, the fish had despawned. So be careful about that.

I was about zero for twenty in HR Rotten Vale and then got it on my first try in LR Rotten Vale. Would advise switching to LR if you're not having any luck.

FYI the Fishing Pole is for suckers. Use the Capture Net. It hilariously works on fish too. Just nabbed this achievement in the Elders Recess Eastern Camp using the net.

Low Rank it is. Just tried it while not paying attention to the rank, but first try on LR.

Start an expedition to Rotten Vale (Central camp). From here go to the position in the video / picture and you will find a very small blue pond and inside this pond golden fishes.

In this pond the rare fish known as "the living fossil" appears. Unfortunaley it is luck if the fish there or not. If the fish not in this pond, leave Rotten Vale and travel to a other area like Ancient Forest and come back. Honestly I personal needed over one hour that the fish appeared.
The location is really close to another capture a (rare) yxz creature achievement. So check both locations in one run to save a lot of time!

The other place you can get this particular fish is in Elder Recess camp that is in Zone 8. I found him at the lake here after about an hour or two of fishing it dry. I caught the Petricanth and popped the achievement only to find the Piscine Researcher in the Rotten Vale later on who gave me the quest to catch it.

The aforementioned solution is good but let me share mine that worked in a few minutes:

1. Go to the Elder Recess, Camp (8).
2. Look in the blue water right there in camp. He was on the left side of the water for me. He may be slightly obscured from your vision behind some crystals. Just walk around a lot, turning your camera every which way to find him.
3. The rare fish glows with blue and black, very hard to miss.
4. if not there, open up the world map and go back Rotten Vale's location in the solution above.
5. If not there, go back to Elder Recess. Rinse, repeat.

Try to find it in LR instead of HR. I spent an hour trying in HR then read about people finding it on the first try in LR. As soon as I went to the Rotten Vale location in LR, it appeared, so I'd recommend giving that a try.

The other solutions are great. I used them. But please note that there is a bounty associated with catching this critter. So save youself a headache and wait until you have the bounty before atempting.

In rotten vale go to area 15 and there will be fishing areas. The on pond can spawn in the living fossil which looks like a big dark blue fish with bright blue spots on it.

It can take hours to spawn. So switching between maps is a great idea.

This achievement is unlocked by catching a fish in the Rotten Vale called the Petricanths. It can spawn at any time of day, so travel there and run to the spot in the video below. If the fish is there, congrats! Fishing in this game is extremely simple so you shouldn't have trouble catching it (see "Angling for a Bite" for help). If it isn't there, fast travel to a different map and return to try again.

Fish are caught in the rotten valley.

I personally caught fish in VR with nets, I was too lazy to look for bait

I went to VR in G. Dolina 8 times, changed to NR and immediately fish!
As with finding birds, vary the difficulty.

PS Along the way you can farm grass, honey, bitter/light beetles, grain of power, mandrake, and
another bird, in the same place, on a moss pig. Don't forget camouflage.

Appears frequently. The fish does not respond to regular bait. I immediately took the beetle bait.

The fish lives in the rotten valley. In the caves you will find an azure lake, that’s where she appears, but not always! Therefore, be patient and reload the map over and over again until you find it.
Fish bite exclusively on bait, and not on bait, so collect the beetles.
