This does not have to be at once, just have 100k over time. Anything you do quest related will drop research points from hunting monsters, to grabbing tracks.
The, Pants, Party
Research points are obtained in a number of ways, the easiest being finding monster tracks (footprints, feathers, mucus, etc). You get a bunch of points for breaking off pieces of monsters during a battle, and the most by killing or capturing a monster.
