Zorah magdaros doesn’t count towards this because you don’t actually kill him you just repel him.

To get this Achievement, you must defeat 50 Elder Dragons.
Elder Dragons are the end game monsters that you will fight (Kirin, Nergigante, Kushala Daora, Teostra, Vaal Hazak, and Xenojiiva).
You CANNOT capture an Elder Dragon, as such all 50 must be killed.
You DO NOT have to be the one to kill the Elder Dragon, as long as you were in the game, all members will be credited.
All quest versions (Assigned, Optional, Investigation, Expedition, Event) will count towards your 50.
Normally you can only hunt one Elder Dragon at a time but there are a few high HR Investigations that will allow you to fight two at once.
**Currently 4-11-18 the Cherry Blossom Event is in play and one of the Events you can post is a Two Kirin Quest in Low Rank which I highly recommend farming to get your 50 much faster!

There are six elder dragons in the game. You can kill the same one 50 times, or a combination of any of them. The Kirin is the easiest at a five-star monster. All of these will unlock as the main story progresses (except Kirin, see HERE for how to unlock its quest), and are as follows:

The easiest option is to go to Xeno'jiiva in multiplayer, one of the easiest ancient ones and the chance that one of the teammates will die is extremely small.

List of ancient dragons:
Kirin
Baal-Hazak
Kushala-Daora
Nergigant
Teostra
Xeno`jiiva
Zora Magdaros (he doesn't count because you don't kill him)
Lunastra (Perhaps it does not count, because it was added over time)
Bahamut (Same as with Lunastra)
Kulve Taroth (You don't kill her)
You can complete quests with several ancient dragons; they usually have less HP and are therefore easier to kill. A distinctive feature of dragons is that they cannot be caught and the seal of the ancient can be placed on them - a debuff that prevents dragons from using their abilities (some attacks), for example, the nergigant will not harden its spikes, the Kirin will not use lightning, etc.
