This achievement is unlocked for hunting 30 'variant' monsters which are different from subspecies (such as coral pukei-pukei or pink rathian). The exact definition for variants is a bit unclear, but to my understanding they are regular monsters that have been enhanced (also afaik subspecies are explicitly labeled in Japanese monster hunter games) and until iceborne weren't really considered separate monsters (#2 and #3 on the list). They generally start in what was the normal monster's rage mode as their default state and have an additional rage mode of their own. Their attacks generally enhance the base monsters but it's still mostly the same fight

I believe that there are currently 6 monsters considered variants and I could not find any information saying otherwise. However I did unlock this achievement 1 hunt earlier than expected so if anyone else is keeping track please let me know if you had the same experience or if this list is wrong:

FYI, these are the few monsters that did not move over from High rank to Master rank. The only one this isn't true for is Scarred Yian Garuga.

Mine popped when I captured Seething Bazelgeuse.

Here is my variant Kill count following your monster list:

• Savage Deviljho - 2

• Ruiner Nergigante - 4

I know this is old now, but in the Large Monster Field Guide, on the Ecology tab, in the Characteristics paragraph it actually says the word ‘variant’ for these. Some are considered subspecies and some are variants, so that may be why only some seem to count.

Awesome guide! Thumbs up for me I really wanted to know what the monsters classified as variant where so I knew what I had and what to hunt. Mine also popped one early as well at 29. My guess is that ruiner nergigante at the end of the story counts. You don’t really kill him but u technically “hunted and won the fight” Just an idea :)

Just popped for me, the new monsters after iceborne released do seem to count. Here are my stats when it unlocked:

Shrieking legiana - 5
Seething bazelgeuse - 8
blackviel vaal hazaak - 8
Savage deviljho - 2
Ruiner nergigante - 1
Scarred Yian Garuga - 2
Furious rajang - 2
Raging brachydios - 1

Which brings my total to 29.
I also did 4 brute tigrex runs as I suspected that that's an variant monster as well, but apparently it's not.
