How to unlock the The Old Everwyrm achievement in MONSTER HUNTER: WORLD - Definitive Guide
This is a story progression achievement, and you will know when you are on the correct mission because it will be your first Assigned Master Rank 5 mission.
You unlock this achievement for slaying the Velkhana, not repelling it.
This hunt is...difficult. It is the first hunt in the game that I failed multiple times in a row, even when prepared. Velkhana is going to test everything you've learned so far, and going in the way you've been progressing up until this point will not work. The equipment you have will most likely not work.
Now, this solution is not going to cover the tactics and tricks to fighting Velkhana. There are a million guides out there that have already covered every aspect. Instead, here are a few tips that I haven't seen covered in other guides:
1.) Don't even bother starting the mission if you don't have Rarity 10 gear or higher. You need a weapon that does 800+ damage, and a total defense of 700+. If you don't have appropriate gear, stop right now and start grinding monsters until you do.
2.) Velkhana is weak to Fire, Thunder, and Dragon elements, in that order. It also uses the Ice element, and causes Iceblight. So you should prioritize forging a Fire weapon that does 800+ damage, and focus on getting your Ice Resistance up with armor and decorations. Ideally, having Ice Resistance and Blight Resistance skills are very useful.
3.) Velkhana is an Elder Dragon, so you can't use traps, and flash and screamer pods won't stun it.
4.) You can upgrade your Mantles through missions in order to add decorations to them as well. The decorations don't activate until you equip the mantle, but having extra skills are always good.
5.) Velkhana will require you to flinch shot it into walls so you can get a knockdown. Without knockdowns, the various ice attacks it has will relentlessly barrage you. When it isn't enraged, you can claw the head and flinch shot it pretty easily.
6.) EAT A MEAL BEFORE THE FIGHT. Too many people neglect eating for skill boosts at the beginning of each hunt. The more stacked skills you have active, the better. Food also boosts your health and stamina.
All of that in mind, you'll still need luck. Velkhana requires every team member to be able to carry their weight, and any slack will result in failure. It will mercilessly agro anyone trying to heal or play support as well. Feel free to post any unheard of tips in the comments, and good luck!
