The Spider-Eyed Mermaid can be found late in the game, at Sparkle Tide. To catch it, you need to use a Plug lure and low- or high-grade bait. Once you have caught one, you need to release it by pressing

within 2 seconds to unlock the achievement.

I caught and released several with the multi lure, but it only unlocked when I used the single rod.

I think this one is buggy. I released the 1st one I caught. Then I released several after it was identified and it has not popped.

For anyone who's having trouble getting it to pop, what seemed to work for me was to wait until the card appeared showing the picture of the fish and then hit B to release. I'd been hitting B as soon as I saw which fish it was, and maybe it wasn't giving the game enough time to register which fish was caught?

I unlocked it with the multi lure but it's probably safer to use a single lure when doing this specifically.
