Shortly after defeating the first acolyte, one will get their first three blessings (by breaking praying statues) as well as a tutorial explaining how to use accumulated skill points. Skill points are earned by filling the meter behind the brain icon in the upper left corner and are exclusively used to upgrade blessings.
To upgrade a blessing, go to a shrine and select “Blessings.” Once in, one can push “X” to upgrade it. Each blessing starts at level 0 and can upgrade to level 5. Each upgrade requires the same number of skill points.
Level 1 - 1 skill point
Level 2 - 2 skill points
Level 3 - 3 skill points
Level 4 - 4 skill points
Level 5 - 5 skill points
This means 15 points are required to fully upgrade a blessing.

It will cost a total of 15 skill points to upgrade a blessing to the maximum level. I would highly suggest going for the one to increase your max health first, then work on any others you like from there. You will need to do this at one of the game's shrines. Experience is awarded for all enemy kills and side-quests, and you will earn one stat point each time the bar over the brain in the upper left of the screen fills up.
