For those wondering: it is possible (and not that hard!) to play the game alone using two controllers. I wouldn't recommend combining this achievement with "Hardcore" and "Faster and faster", though. It would be wise to tackle every achievement in your first solo playthrough before playing co-op by yourself.

Other idea: play it on PC: with the arrows and the W/A/S/D combination.

Also worth noting that despite the game telling you that only the left stick and bumper are the controls in 2 player mode you can actually use either stick/bumper on each controller. So using the left side of your left controller and right side of the right controller and it almost feels like your playing the single player mode, only difference is you can't switch around with the A button but I only had a couple of areas where that was tricky. I even managed to do this in under 2 hours.
