In the main questline around mission 10 or 11 you will come to a planet of cat people and they will ask you to find a part for one of their vehicles if you want to race. Find the part in the planetarium and you can head back to start the race.
Its fairly simple although the AI can be annoying and there isnt any turn signage. There is however a shortcut you can use on the 3rd or 4th turn in the canyon which can get you ahead of the pack. Also watch out for your drop pod as it is right in the way towards the end of the lap.
