Unlock the Recollection of Strength ability from Sister Genessa first so you have access to the kick attack (X). Just kicking an enemy off a ledge to their death won't be enough to get this one since it has to be a "bottomless pit" they fall into.
There are plenty of places to get this but a good early one is just a few steps past Eredrim's body. An enemy will be standing on a long and narrow ledge with stairs behind him. Make sure you've saved a bar of resolve to perform the kick and aim towards the edge. Hardening against their first attack will throw them off balance and can make lining up the kick a bit easier.

Another good location is the first temple, as mentioned in the walkthrough (Shrine of Ash page). On the way to Imrot, there is a room with a pit in the middle, with a few basic enemies next to it (think it was 4). Used the kick for the first time and he went straight into the pit.

i kicked someone off a ledge and they didnt die but this popped.

Each shell has an ability called "Recollection of Strength" that can be unlocked which will allow you to perform a kick ability by pressing 
when you have at least one bar of resolve. There are many locations to unlock this achievement, though you have to knock an enemy into a pit rather than killing them with fall damage onto the ground. There's a very obvious enemy with its back to you looking out over a cliff on your way down to fight the Enslaved Grisha boss, but any cliff will do.
