At clan rank 2 you can become a vassal of a faction. To do this, approcah your chosen faction leader and pledge your alliegence. Fight for that faction in any wars or tournaments & complete quests given to you by your fellow lords to build up influence, renown and affection within your faction and eventually, the votes on who should own captures castles or cities should include yourself and you can boost your vote chance by using your influence to sway any close votes in your favour.

I found this video that breaks down how the game chooses the candidates for new fiefs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMOyMMUD9hA. To summarize, any lord that doesn't already have a settlement gets a massive boost, and further boosts go to the capturer, player, and ruler. The score can be increased more by being poor, having a higher clan tier, and being a stronger clan. I don't believe this formula determines what candidates other vassals will support, I think that is based entirely on relations with them (not 100% sure). You can view which clans have the most influence by going to the kingdom screen then the vassals tab, so you might want to focus on buddying up with the biggest guys to get the bigger influence boosts on votes.

After capturing any castle, a vote is held to whom to transfer it to. It’s easier to carry out sieges on your own with a detachment or your own army, then the chance of winning the vote is very high.
