As you kill enemies your multiplier increases, but every time you die your multiplier goes down by 1x. The difficulty that you play does not affect how fast your multiplier increases so your best bet is to play on the easiest setting (white belt).

One thing that does give your multiplier a nice boost is by obtaining beastie combos. You get beastie combo bonuses by killing a certain number of the same color enemy in a row. When you kill an enemy that has a beastie combo, a number will appear on the top of the screen that will decrease each time you kill that color enemy in succession, but will reset if you kill another type or color of enemy in between. When the counter gets to zero, you get the bonus which is accompanied by a dinging sound.

There is a good chance that you will get this by going through the game normally on easy, but if you are having problems, there is a trick:

- Load up Level 2 in World 1 and make your way to the third room. In this room, there will be 3 rocket guns that spawn around an orange spinning thing. As long as you kill the guns without destroying the orange thing in middle, the guns will continue to respawn. For every three guns you destroy in a row, you will get a beastie combo that will be a nice boost to your multiplier. You will want to destroy each gun before it shoots its rocket because destroying a rocket will reset the beastie combo, and of course there is the chance of dying too.

- There is a time limit for each level, and when it expires you cannot score anymore points for that level, but you should have no problem reaching 10x multiplier before the time expires. See my video below which shows this strategy in action:
