How to unlock the Heart of a champion achievement in naild - Definitive Guide
This isn't so much a solution, as it is an understanding of how the ranks work.
Some of you may have noticed your leaderboard rank is actually tied to your career score and NOT your actual online progression. This is half-true.
In reality, your leaderboard rank is based of your score from all 14 tracks in the game on the three different modes: Stunt, Simple, and Simple w/Boost Mutator. So, it's a combo of 42 different scores.
As for the scores themselves, they're based on time. After you finish a race, hit the LB button to display your statistics. You should see a score in the top right hand corner (that's most likely somewhere in the thousands). This score is what contributes to the leaderboard. How much you get for score depends on where you are on the board.
For example, I was doing a Boost Mutator race with a dummy and I got 12th on the boards for that race; the score I got from it was a little over 10,000.
Chances are that your first go-round of the game, your scores won't be as great if they would be if you run it again, so you won't have to worry 'too much' about finding people ranked higher then you.
UPDATE: Some more things I've figured out.
- If you have the DLC, those maps count towards your score as well in all three modes. The 'detonator races' may count for each map in the entire game as well but I can't be certain.
- Your actual rank is linked to your save data, not saved on a leaderboard. However, it's one of those 'genius' games that saves to your profile rather than your hard drive, so you can't delete it.
But if someone finds a way, let me know?

You can check your online rank from the main menu, multiplayer > ranking
Once leaderboard displays , press RB to find your position.
Message everyone who is better ranked than you and with luck they ll help you.
Warning: your rank depends of your career progression, dont go to far in the solo or it ll be difficult to find 5 players better classed than you
Good luck everyone ;)

Does it have to be single race against 5 or you can do 5 separate races?
