How to unlock the Dunk-Off achievement in NBA 2K9 - Definitive Guide
Finally, after a number of attempts and different techniques, I used the guide below to clinch this sought after achievement.
The basic guide and list of dunks below comes from Ch13fsin on Xbox360achievements.com, and isn't actually a guide for the NBA 2K9 achievement, but for the glitched dunk off achievement in NBA 2K10 (it still works for the 2009 achievement though). I've added a whole heap of extra info to help out as well.
Ultimately this is a great guide because the dunks are relatively simple to execute - the trick is just in the timing in terms of jumping over the obstacles and barriers.
In the qualifying rounds, do the following dunks. Each of them, when executed correctly, should see you get between 80 and 95 - which should be enough to win each round. If it is not, have all four dunkers player controlled and just have the three who are making up the numbers not attempt their dunks and thus score lowly.
The directions in the descriptions below correspond to the directional arrows you should use when attempting the dunks. Remember, timing is everything, so I'd advise building some confidence by doing these dunks in dunk school to practice.
Round 1 Dunk 1: Leaning Tomahawk (right, right) over the Vegas Sign (this is the hardest to do out of all of these so I do it first. I always restart if I trip over this.)
Round 1 Dunk 2: Show & Go (up, up) over the Ball Rack
Round 1 Dunk 3: Baseline Tomahawk (up, left) over the Bench
Round 2 Dunk 1: Clear for Takeoff (up, down) over the Chair
Round 2 Dunk 2: Holla (up, right) over the Construction Barricade
Round 2 Dunk 3: Put It In Reverse (left, down) over the 5 Drums (as GimmeDLC quite rightly states, this dunk should actually be done over the Sprite Ball Rack - be careful when doing it, theball rack is a little taller and can be tricky if your timing is off)
Round 3 Dunk 1: J-Smoove (left, right) over the 3 Speakers
Round 3 Dunk 2: Rim Slammer (left, up) over the Sprite Barricade
Round 3 Dunk 3: Rock the Rim (down, down) over the 7 tyres (can be done over 5 tyres)
After three rounds you'll win and then should be challenged by someone - usually Kobe Bryant or Tracy McGrady.
They'll put on a show with their dunks, and most of the time they'll make both of them. There have been reports of them missing a dunk - I haven't seen it myself, so prepare yourself to have to make the following two dunks.
Round 4 Dunk 1: The Elev8r (down, up) over the Car (surprisingly easy, just practice your timing and jump)
Round 4 Dunk 2: Rock the Cradle (left, left) over the Construction Horse (a bit harder, but very do-able)
These dunks will both garner you about 90. If you can alley oop them, add 5-8 points each time. 90 points for both dunks should be enough to win - when I have made the final the most the other dunker has gotten is 92 or 93 but then they have followed up with an 85.
When I won the achievement y'day, I even missed two of the dunks in the early preliminary rounds. But I nailed all three in the third round at about 88 points each.
In the dunk off against Kobe, I was level with him on 89 after the first dunk, then outscored him by three points (88 to 85) on the second ... then danced around the house in celebration when the achievement popped up.
A final point, the clock counts down even as you place the props and obstacles ...two good ideas to save time in the preliminary rounds are:
1 - memorise the order in which the props appear on screen so you can flick to the one you want quickly.
2 - Use the dunker before one you are gunning for the achievement with to find the prop you want in the menu - do not place the prop, hit the red button to cancel the placement after you've found it, but when "your dunker" is ready to go, the prop will be the first one to appear when you flick to the prop menu - saving you maybe 5 seconds.
When the final dunk off comes up, you're on you're own. Just memorise the order the props appear and quickly flick to the ones you need.
The car and the construction horse are almost the last choices, so using the left button to scroll through rather than the right will get them to appear more quickly.

Okay, this is what I did while going for the Dunk-Off achievement in NBA 2K9.
First, go to Options->Manage Rosters->Rosters in the main Menu. Then drag all the stats to max on Andre Igoudala (playing for Phoenix Suns). Stay in the manage rosters menu, but now drag all the Stats down to 50 and change their height to the max (7,11") on these players:
1. Kobe Bryant (LA Lakers)
2. Vince Carter (New Jersey Nets)
3. Tracy McGrady (Houston Rockets)
4. Jason Richardson (Phoenix Suns)
These are the most common players i have experienced, please let me know if you have seen another challenger and I'll add him to the list.
Okay, when that's done, you wanna go to the NBA Blacktop->Dunk Contest and choose the first four players (A. Iguodala, L. James, J. Smith, D. Howard). Picking them in order makes it easier. Make sure you steer all of them, no one should be a CPU.
Now listen carefully, all you have to do is:
1. Make a dunk as Igoudala (I scored above 90).
2. As soon as you get control over LeBron, set a timer on your phone or something to 9:40.
3. Now you can go and do whatever you want in a few minutes.
4. When the alarm start making noise, you wanna go to the Xbox 360 again.
5. Now, repeat step 1.
6. As soon as you get control over LeBron, set the timer to 6.40
7. Repeat step 3 and 4.
8. Repeat step 1.
9. As soon as you get control over LeBron, set the timer to 3. 45
10. Repeat step 3 and 4.
11. Now, just hope you get a challenger to challenge you.
I got a challenger 2 out of 2 times (the first time my player got invisible and I was unable to win).
The dunks:
1. Richardson scored 90.
2. I did a Alley Oop to my self and a down, down dunk over the car and got 97 points.
3. Richardson scored 97 points.
4. I did a Alley Oop to my self and a down, up dunk over 3 barrels and scored 96 points.
I really hope this helped and if you think there's something I should add, let me know!

Not only does this work. But it is funny as hell to watch these 7'11'' guys try to dunk. JR missed all attempts.

So strange that I went invisible also for my first attempt. Now for the second run at the achievement.

This is the video I used off Youtube to help me get the achievment. This is not my video. This also helps u get the Sprite Slam Dunk Achievement as well IF you use LeBron James.

Great video, worked perfectly.

Finally!!! I tried this so many times and didn't get a challenger. I did have a problem with Lebron going invisible once Vince Carter showed up. I'd strongly recommend doing the trick where you increase the size of the four common players to max height and lower all their stats. Lebron was invisible but I still managed to land two simple dunks and get the achievement. Vince missed both times.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

messing with the stats of the guys that may challange you dosent make a difference. and if you make them the shortest size possible (5'2) that wont affect them any either, but if you make them as big as you can (7'11) they will really struggle to get any dunks down. do this and follow the guide by chris8875 and youll get this in no time. also, dont worry about your scores! i let the clock run out after only doing the first dunk of every round and i still got a challanger. they show up randomly! pressing the "a" button to skip the emcee's actions also wont affect it any!
********************* IMPORTANT NOTE ************************
IT'S NOT NECESSARY TO SCORE HIGHER THEN 85 TO GET THE CHALLENGER.
OK. Here is what happened to me: the first time I played the dunk contest was with Lebron James, I didn't score too high, but I wasn't worry about this achivement (but get the challenge anyway, never trained then lost).
Then, looking for this achivement, get Lebron James and score above 85 and the challenger does not appear. Then I tryed with Kobe Bryant, and the challenger shows up, but I didn't score above 85, in fact I even missed a dunk. Here are my dunk list:
Leaning Tomahawk - 99
Show & Go - 91
Baseline Romahawk - 95
Clear For Takeoff - 83
Holla - 97
Put it in Reverse - 100
Missed - 5
Rim Slapper - 95
Rock the Rim - 100
Vince Carter challenge:
Vince: The D.D.P. - 88
Kobe: Elev8r - 100
Vince: Brand New Funk - 94
Kobe: Rock the Cradle - 100
I don't know exactly what brings the challenger, but looks like changing the dunker will help on this. Maybe the challenger will show up once for each player, don't know.
Just want to share this info with the community, maybe can help someone.

Using the 4 human controlled players as stated in the Sprite Slam Dunk Achievement. Once you defeat those 3 you will be randomly challenged by AI controlled opponent. The challenger will ONLY spawn and challenge you when you have averaged around 80-85 throughout all three rounds. So practice those hard ones such as Helicopter,Kicking It Harder and Sidewinder just to name a few. Once the challenger arrives you will have to defeat him in a 2 dunk battle lasting 20 seconds a piece. Beating him isn't that easy, you will have to land two 90+ point dunks to defeat him. Below are instructions on how to do so.
Attempt 1 - Cartwheel Dunk
A) Head to the left side of the court
B) Just outside the 3 point line start your dunk sequence.
C) Using at 12 o'clock go counter clockwise a full turn twice.
D) Quickly hold the right after he does the cartwheel and get it into the small box.
E) If done correctly you should land a 93-96 point dunk.
Attempt 2 - Dunk over a car.
A) Head to the left side of the court.
B) Press to open up the props, then to cycle to the car.
C) Set the car on the left side of the court.
D) Starting at the 3 point line, Using the go Up, then down quickly.
E) Quickly hold the right after he jumps over the car until the meter is in the box.
F) If done correctly, easily a 95-100 point dunk.
