Break the backboard in a Classic or Remix game with an alley oop!

How to unlock the Iron Will achievement in NBA JAM - Definitive Guide

I attempted a few combinations of players and options for this achievement, but Howard/Shaq [ORL] seemed fine. You should be able to get this achievement by scoring only alley-oops in a 2v2 (though board-breaks appear to be mostly luck) but I used the following:

3 controllers: P1-CPU vs. P2-P3
Options: 2 minutes, 0 shot-clock, Easy (in hindsight, a longer quarter would've been better, but I'm not sure if that affects the chance of the board breaking)
Players: Howard-Shaq [ORL] (high strength and dunk ratings)
Opponent: Anyone 2 players with weak strength control stats; I used the Clippers

I achieved this by attempting as many alley oops as possible. Make sure when trying to get on the offence, push from behind as it has a higher chance to make the opponent fumble. Standing inside the top of the key also encourages your CPU team mate to go for the alley-oop, if you need to build up dunks. Also be sure when passing to yourself for the alley-oop, don't continue holding the A button as you'll pass before you score. The board broke when scoring the 86th point with the following stats:

Howard (1P): 7 dunks-17 alley oops
Shaq (CPU): 8 dunks-3 alley oops

It seems to come down to chance when the board breaks as I had several matches just dunking until 50-75 points, then alley-ooping to 90 odd points and not having the board break, but you should be able to get it in a few attempts if you haven't already got it while playing normally.

NOTE: You have to be the one to make the board-breaking dunk, not your team-mate.

Do you have to be the one dunking for this? I passed to my AI teammate, he ooped, broke the backboard, no achievement.

Oh, yes. Sorry, I will edit the solution to include that. It has to be you that dunks.

I did everything in your solution, except I changed the length to 3 minutes. I eventually got it after about 120 points of dunks/alley-oops. Also got "Clean Sheet" in the same game.

Is there any sure fired way to get your players to do an alley oop?

There are three things to keep in mind while going for this achievement:

1. Be ahead in the score. It won't unlock otherwise.
2. Have at least 50 points. This seems to be the magic number in the score.
3. It has to be the 4th quarter. Won't happen earlier whatsoever, It takes time to weaken the rim and backboard.

Dunk and alley oop the entire game, you won't see it but it will cause damage. 4th quarter always alley oop. If you can get your player on fire, it will help significantly. It has to be you to break the board, not your teammate.

I did this with Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors, with DeMar DeRozan as my teammate against the Milwaukee Bucks. It unlocked for me when I did an alley oop to make the score 60-32 in the game.

NOTE: I have seen the AI get this in 3rd and with under 50 points, but have never seen another player/human do this in less. If I do, I will change it.

great guide man...
2 things u should probly add... both may seem obvious at least 1 was'nt 4 me...
1)turbo dunks and dunks well on fire will increase power to your dunks
2)fairly sure this can not be done with a pg sg or small forward no matter how high thier strength rateing is has to be a big man. tried with labron james 4 like 10 games scoreing 50+with all dunks and ally oops with never broke it once despite me getting 70+ points twice

This trophy should be done in a Classic Campaign game. Use a team with powerful dunkers, such as the Miami Heat, and only dunk the ball the first three quarters of the game. In the fourth quarter, only do alley oop dunks in hopes of breaking the backboard. I have noticed the backboard breaks in the 60-70 point range late in the fourth quarter.

You NEED to be the one to dunk the ball off the alley oop. Have your CPU teammate throw you an alley oop by pressing up on the and hitting to have your CPU teammate pass you the ball in mid air to complete the alley oop. Break the backboard with the alley oop and the trophy will pop.

The easiest way to do this is in the smash remix mode, make sure your drone teammate has the ball when you are about to break the back board and that you slam the ball in. Some people are having trouble unlocking this in Smash mode, but the Play Now method (See Clean Sheet) will work too, as long as you dunk as much as possible in the first half and keep going for the layup in the second.
