How to unlock the Rise to the Challenge achievement in NBA Playgrounds - Definitive Guide

I am going to focus on the 15 steals challenge because that seems to be the major issue with this achievement.

They key to this is knowing how stamina works in this game. While you cannot see the stamina bars of the CPU, you can see them do actions that cause them to lose stamina, and thus make it easier to steal the ball.

First, you want to get the ball and follow the guidelines below. As shown by the video clip, actions that make the CPU lose stamina while you have the ball include: Stealing, Pushing, and Elbowing.

Stealing: This is the most common form of stamina use. One swipe from the CPU is not enough to drain their stamina, so you need to bait them into attempting to steal 2-3 times before letting them steal it. Then do a quick steal when they pick up the ball to get the best chance of getting it back.

Pushing: Whenever the CPU has nothing in their Lottery Bar (Power-up bar at the top), they tend to try and push you when you have the ball. This is because pushing causes you to lose power on the lottery bar, so since they have no lottery bar power, they can push without penalty. Although it doesn't happen often, the CPU will occasionally try to steal with no lottery bar. Pushing tends to be a big stamina waste, so immediately after the CPU picks up the ball, you will have a good chance to steal.

Elbowing: Similar to pushing, the CPU loses a ton of stamina while elbowing with the ball. So if you can get close immediately after an elbow, you have a good chance at a steal.

If the CPU ever gets the ball and makes a few passes, do your best to let them score quickly so you can get the ball back. Winning is not the goal here, stealing is.

As a disclaimer, even with this strategy, there is no guarantee at a steal, and 15 steals in 3 minutes is still challenging. This took me at least 3 hours to perfect the endless stealing.

I hope this can provide some help to this tough challenge!

Here's my Public Service Announcement: If you're going out of your mind trying to get 15 steals right now, the devs wrote on their forum yesterday, 5/18, that they are lowering the requirement from 15 to 10 in the next patch.

Question for those that have completed this - do the consecutive challenges mean you need to sink 10 3's without missing or just 10 straight baskets have to be 3's?

@Timeless Magic - for the consecutive challenges you are allowed to miss, you just have to score 10 straight 3's. I kept restarting until I found a video on YouTube that mentioned you can miss.

J ROLLER: No, don't need to stop the AI. You don't even need to make every shot. Just the shots you make have to be 3 pointers.

J ROLLER: I had trouble with that too. You can't do any dunks or layups. Those don't count as "two pointers" according to this game. Once I did only jump shots, the challenge unlocked.

Thanks Cripple ill keep trying, so just do jump shots. And what if you score first does that count as you get 3 points for a 2 point shot?

I avoided getting the first points just to be safe as I was frustrated from my dunks not counting, so I don't know for sure. Haha.

xSRYANx I used Cripple's method above and after about 2-3 attempts I got it. You want to keep some space in between yourself and the cpu so he shoots a jump shot (I found it much harder to block dunks). Once you see him going for the jump shot hit y with your player to jump straight up and block the ball. I used two players that had 9 and 10 shot block rankings and was consistently getting block in the final game. I wish I had more advice for ya but just keep trying!

EDIT: I just looked at your profile and it appears you got it. Congrats!

I’m having a difficult time having the other team to want to steal the ball. And what players did everyone use? Right now I am using spud webb and john stockton and the most I’ve gotten is 5 by pure luck.

You definitely need someone with atleast a 9 in steals and stamina, I finally got all my steals with Jeremy Lin and Maurice Cheeks with the video solution above. John Stockton or Gary Payton weren't cutting it with the 8 stamina.

Just wanted to say that I completed ALL challenges BUT Madrid ones and got the achievement anyway, a majorly good surprise! laugh
As I really enjoy the game, I'm completing Madrid challenges, anyhow, even though I already got the cheevo.

Hope this helps, somehow, since I dunno if that was a glitch... Hope it happens to you guys, as well...

You only need challenges from first six tournaments. So up to LAS VEGAS including. No glitch here. You did your legwork 😁.
Anyhow , cant even do 4 steals. Annoying as f... .

Maurice Cheeks and Chris Paul did it for me. Apart Steal, Stamina and speed are very important here. Three games and and they started stealing without my help. Hope this helps someone. John Stockton is also clever AI.

I thought I’d add these all have to be from the first six events. If you complete a challenge from event 7 or on it WILL NOT count toward this achievement.

Hello can anyone help me with my last challenge
Perform 10 spectacular dunks in a row in one game

By xCHAOSx95 on 14 Feb 2018 19:12
@xCHAOSx95 - I believe I used Blake Griffin. Do alley oops primarily. You can miss dunks, but the 10 shots you make can ONLY be spectacular dunks. For me the window was very tight. If I missed more than two dunks, I didn't have time to get 10. Also, what really helped me get over the edge, is play very soft defense. Unless you have a an easy steal, just let them score. It wastes too much time playing strong defense.

A lot of the tougher challenges are actually easier than they were before due to reduced requirements. Probably worth updating the guide to reflect this.

10 spectacular dunks is so dumb. I can’t dunk because bill Russell’s dumbass keeps stealing the ball.

By SL1CK CHR1S on 03 Jun 2018 02:56
For the 10 consecutive spectacular dunks I used Blake Griffin and Julius Erving, who had 10 and 9 dunk skill. What I did was initiate the dunk behind the yellow square/free throw line inside the 2 point area. I noticed if I was outside that yellow square the dunks looked more acrobatic or "spectacular." I don't know if that actually has anything to do with it though laugh

Also to note you don't have to win the match if you already beat it. Like me I beat it without the challenge. Went back and did the challenge and lost and still counted.

Anyone have a list of the required locations? I have 10 locations and no idea which are the original 6.

Some challenges are hard to complete during the normal duration of a game. Make sure the points are tied, when the game time runs out, so the duration is extended.
For some challenges (such as blocks), you should lose the ball as fast as possible by instantly throwing or letting the enemy steal it.

With the consecutive 2/3 pointers do you need to stop the AI from scoring as well? Any tips on blocking?
0

By J ROLLER 1979 on 03 Jan 2018 16:19
For the blocks, I had Portland Bill Walton who has a block of 10. I tried to keep a little distance between me and the opponent. I found when I was too close, my player would fade backwards making it nearly impossible to block. Keeping some distance helps bait them into more jump shots too.

@CrippleThreat8 Thanks you for your help . I threw 11 alley oops baskets and still the challenge is not unlocked (cup is still silver). after that I played two more games and again made 11 baskets with alley-oops and still not unlocked. I threw all the baskets in a row

This solution is obsolete. The now updated 6 steals instead of 15 challenge is a steal compared to the 6 blocks in 3 minutes.

rbenthompson advice worked for me too when trying to get the 6 blocks. Pressure the AI into going for 3 pointers by attempting to steal the ball and when the timer is low go for the block.

To the handful of us who want to 100% the game before it gets delisted and removed from Game pass

There was a patch that reduced the goals for the last couple of challenges that was never mentioned in the solutions. For instance, the 15 Steals in Las Vegas was reduced down to 6.

As for team comp, I don't really have too much advice other than play people with 9's and 10's in the field you are working on.

The point of this post is to say it IS possible and you ONLY need to do the 4 challenges for each of the 6 Playgrounds. Anything after that was just fluff they added later and not tied to this achievement.

Don't let it look like a mountain, you got this!

So the above solution and comments are great. Just a couple tips that I found that worked for me.

-Steals are easiest when the opponent is lower on stamina. I found that if I went to the opponents corner and let them steal the ball from me I was able to swipe right away a couple of times and they seemed to get steals fairly often. This worked for me the first time I did it. Not saying it’s a guaranteed method, but give it a shot.

-Blocks were the hardest for me. I used Mutombo and Gobert. While Bill had the special block ability, I found that the taller players worked best for me regardless. I have read that ‘mashing’ Y works for some people, but I was able to unlock it by “holding” Y through the blocks. Obviously, you’re trying to play defense the whole time. Full court shots and speeding down the court to dunk are your only real options in the interest of time. Do not concern yourself with winning. Just float near the top of the key and hope they start shooting. Never get up in their face. Give them some room and for dunks, coming from behind seemed to work best for me. Play the whole game through too! I got 3 blocks in the last 25 seconds.

Stealing was the easiest for me if i just don't let the enemy shoot or block so the lottery bar don't get points to fill. They will punsh you and you can easily grab back the ball. I managed to get 3 before they scored the first time. Let them score quick and let them use the lottery pick. After this you got your second chance and i managed to get 5 in the second try.

Blocking - if they throw for 3 points jump just a liiiiitle moment later as they released the ball. After a few games you lnow the exact moment when you have to jump to block. Don't rebound the ball because sometime they rebound and take a bad shot immediatly after it and these are easier to block in my opinion.

I noticed most people are writing a guide for steals but no mention of who best to use.
Naturally you'd think someone with 10 steal is the best (as did I), so maybe you'd use Rondo (twice) and every time I failed, but whilst I was going for 3 pointers, I was using Sam Jones and Steph Curry and I noticed these 2 were getting steals for fun (I assume it's due to high stamina).

Anyway, try those 2 or anyone with high stamina, I ended up getting about 8 steals.

You do not need to win the match for the challenge to be complete, you can even quit the match after completing the challenge. It is best to pick the appropriate player for the challenge (that has good stats).

To block, press . To steal, press . To perform an Alley-oop and spectacular dunk, press + . For the consecutive challenges, you can miss your shot; just make sure to don’t score a 2-pointer instead of a 3-pointer.

Challenges

New York:

  • Score 2 (THREE-POINTERS) in one game
  • Perform 1 (BLOCK) in a game
  • Perform 2 (STEALS) in one game

  • Score 3 (THREE-POINTERS) in one game
  • Perform 4 (SPECTACULAR DUNKS) in one game

You need to complete 4 tests in each of the tournaments in the following cities:
New York
Las Vegas
London
Paris
Shanghai
Tokyo
There are 24 trials in total. The remaining cities are not needed for the trophy.
