How to unlock the Independence Day achievement in NCAA Football 12 - Definitive Guide

Just like the description says. DO NOT change conferences. BYU has to be an independent for this achievement to unlock. Also, it helps to schedule a ranked team every week on your schedule. Otherwise, you may not be ranked in the top 2 at the end of the season even if you are undefeated.

To make this faster, play 1-minute quarters on freshman difficulty. I got this in one sitting that way.

Hey, great advice on the 1 minute quarters, took me about 2 hours to finish this. Worked beautifully. Thanks.

Crap. Put BYU in the big 10 so I could get both achievements. Oh well, at least I got one cheevo out of it. Thanks for the solution, thumbs up!

I found that the best sure fire way to unlock this in one attempt is to edit all the starters on BYU to 99 overall and knock down the ratings of the QBs, HBs, and WRs on the other top 10 or 15 teams in the game (this is also useful for a few other achievements). After editing the rosters make sure you put everything else to default settings and don't mess with any of the conferences or your starting schedule, turn off auto save, make a save for week one and start advancing weeks. I made a new manual save after every 3 or so weeks just to make sure I was still undefeated. You should move up to rank 1 or 2 around the time of BYU's 2nd bye week, if all goes well you'll make it to the BCS National Championship game on your first attempt. Make a new alternate save and start the game up as if to play it, when in the game super sim it until the fourth quarter then if you're leading go ahead and play the final quarter or at least the last minute or so of the game just to be safe. When you win the achieve should unlock before you exit the game, good luck and let me know if I made any errors in the solution, I got it on my first attempt using this method and it took about 20 minutes give or take.

DO NOT CHANGE CONFERENCES, keep BYU as an independent...

Note- You CAN edit the schedule to include some more top ranked teams at the beginning of the season to help elevate your ranking. Thanks to DJTRUTH1187 for the find.

Not sure, I had heard that you couldn't edit any of the default settings in order for the achieve to unlock so I didn't mess with the schedule, my friend and I both got ranked to #2 on our first try using this method without editing the schedule and only editing the ratings of the other top teams down and BYU's up to 99. Will credit your find in the original solution though.

Confirm - i got this by editing my schedule to include the top 3 teams in the first few weeks of the season. If you can replace any other unranked teams, do it, but def. get the top ones on your schedule and beat them. I simmed through the later games and played the BCS champ game with 1 min. quarters to win. Good solution!

The only issue to this method is how long it would take to max out everyone to 99 vs. just one minute quarters and winning on freshman. If you turn the play clock off, makes it a lot easier - just run the clock down after a run...

Just a tip if you run into the same problem I did. If you're having trouble passing other undefeated teams in the polls, you can play and lose as those teams (or win as the opposing team) to get BYU a top 2 spot.

NOTE: When creating your coach, make sure to set his alma mater to BYU. When you get this trophy, you'll also unlock Dream Job and Hometown Hero.

This one is a little trickier since BYU is in the Independent conference. DO NOT move BYU into another conference, doing so voids the trophy even if you win the national title.

The great thing about being an Independent team, you can modify the entire schedule to make it easier to have a better chance at reaching the BCS game. Modify your schedule so that it isn't too hard but isn't too easy. Too hard and you'll lose and have to repeat multiple games. Too easy and you'll most likely not get a bid to the BCS bowl because of a lack of strength in the schedule.

Here's the schedule I used:

Week 1: @ Ole Miss
Week 2: @ #22 Texas
Week 3: USC
Week 4: @ Pittsburgh
Week 5: @ Utah State
Week 6: North Carolina
Week 7: @ Oregon State
Week 8: Kentucky
Week 9: #14 TCU
Week 10: OPEN
Week 11: Northwestern
Week 12: Boston College
Week 13: @ Arizona
Week 14: OPEN

You're going to want to turn off Auto-Save. That way if you lose one week, you can back out of the dynasty and try again. Losing one game pretty much means you won't make it to the big show. Make sure to save after each week that you win.

Once you reach the championship game, start the game and SuperSim until the end of the game. To speed this up, make the quarters set at one or two minutes.

You can not change the conference of BYU for this achievement. Doing this normaly would be extremely hard and time consuming since Independents can not be added into the AQ. However, there is an easy way to do this. Create the following custom schedule:

  1. Oklahoma
  2. Alabama
  3. Oregon
  4. LSU
  5. Texas A&M
  6. Mississippi State
  7. TCU
  8. Notre Dame
  9. Open
  10. Florida State
  11. Open
  12. Auburn
  13. Stanford
  14. FCS Team

Using this schedule you will get you strength of schedule advantage and eliminate some of the top teams. Now turn all of the sliders in your favor, turn off offsides, and set quarters to one minute. Once you get up by 3 scores and to the half, supersim it and you should have no problem getting the win. I was ranked #1 by week 10 using this method. If you get to week 10 and are not number one, play a game as the teams above you and keep running the ball for safeties to make them lose.

Note: If for some reason the game won't let you select one of the teams, just select any ranked team
