Between Missions you will be able to, among other things, upgrade your character as well as your mastiff. Any upgrade for the dog will do so long as you can afford it.
IMPORTANT: If you are playing on an Xbox One like I was when I played the game, it is almost guaranteed that when you upgrade the dog, your game will crash and you will be booted to the dashboard. You can still get this achievement on an Xbox One since the game only crashes once you leave the upgrade screen for the Mastiff, so feel free to purchase whatever upgrade or upgrades for the Mastiff you like in order to unlock this. Just don't expect them to save.
