How to unlock the Mental Unblock achievement in Need for Speed - Definitive Guide
Be sure to join a game by yourself. With other players in the game, there's a pretty good chance that they'll interfere, even if they're just free roaming. How to play alone: Hold the button -> Settings -> Game Settings -> Play Alone.
Use the brake to initiate drifts and avoid using the e-brake too much since this slows you down more. Ken's car is fully tuned for drifting so it might slide a lot more than you're used to. It also makes it a little difficult to straighten out after a drift. Release or feather the gas to help control your car in these situations.
Try to get most of your score from the mountain sections in the first half of the course. If you can maintain a decent angle and keep your speed up at least 70MPH, you should be getting 10-20k per drift easily. Once you're in the city, there's less room for big drifts so it'll be a little harder but there are still plenty of opportunities for high scores.
Do your best to not hit any walls, especially in the mountain section at the beginning. Even lightly bumping the wall will cause you to lose all your points for that drift. Bumping into other cars or traffic will not cause you to lose your points for that drift.
You'll want at least 200k when you get to the tunnel. If you hit too many walls on the way down, it's probably worth it to restart.
Some people are unlocking the achievement just getting the required score and not having to finish the event, but does not work that way for others. It's a little buggy in that regard. Finishing within the time limit is really the only way to guarantee you'll unlock it.
As you can see in the video below, I do pretty poorly in the city section and still (almost) make it to the end and unlock the achievement, so there is some room for errors.
Parts like the train station are where you need to enter and leave cleanly. Don't pull anything in there as the car tries to kill you if you're not careful. Learn where to earn points.
Most importantly: They don't call this 'Need For Speed' for nothing. In the first bunch of hairpins, a speed of about 100mph can net you huge points. I approached the first sort of roundabout near the lighthouse with 150K by mastering that and that run got me the achievement. You'll be wise to slow down in the urban areas but sweeping bends are perfect.
- You need Ken's Car, which you can buy for free in the garage. It is only availible if you have finished the entire Manu storyline. (Credits to erod550)
- You need 350.000 Score
- You should finish the race (Some persons got the achievement without finishing. Some including me not.)
This is a realy hard achievement which needs a lot of tries and training.
Make sure you get enough points in the big curves at the beginning. By only hitting (and not ), its possible to get 15.000 points each curve.
At the first circle (where you turn arround) you should have 100.000-150.000, If you drive through the tunnel, you should have arround 200.000 to 250.000 points.
If not, restart (or train the remaining part of the track).
Its realy hard to get points in the city after the tunnel. And you need speed, to get the finishing line.
1. In the hill section at the start I would use nos in-between the hairpins, this speed boost helped me finish on time and gave extra seconds to get more points in the city.
2. Don't try and drift too much on the straights in the hills, it gives you an extra couple of k's but I found its more important to use the straights to setup for the hairpins, that's where the real scores are
3. Try and drift using the left trigger, I found it keeps your speed up which helped to get the higher scores for each drift. If you start drifting and find you are going to hit something then use the handbrake to quickly stop
4. I had 220k at the tunnel on my final run. My best score for the city section was 160k, I found I could get around 20k in the area when you come out of the tunnel. It's pretty open (apart from a few trees)
5. Switch to "Play alone" mode. (settings -> gameplay)This will prevent other human players messing up your run. You still have to contend with the AI drivers but there was nothing worse than executing a great drift to find a player AFK in the middle of the road
But once i use the E-brake in tight corners and nitro
Nitro you should use in all corners it builds up speed and points
If you going to hit the wall release the RT gas and steer of the wall
I also get points in fast corners by drifting and using nitro
don't be afraid using E-brake if you going to fast at a corner but use the nitro to gain speed
It is easiest wat other peaple say by getting 200000 or more if possible befor you hit the tunnel aria because after the tunnel is the more difficult part you make more mistakes it has tight corners hier i use the E-brake and nitro alot
Hope this helps Some peaple
It just clicked today, and I started getting the drifts much much better, and crushed it. Before, I was getting scores in the mid to high 200s, with a couple runs above 300, my record was about 310k. I was getting to about 150 - 180k by the tunnel.
I primarily use the brake to drift, though I will often just tap the handbrake to get it started. As soon as the drift starts, especially on longer drifts in the switchbacks, hit the nitrous, and hold it through your entire drift. Don't really bother much with nitrous before the drift starts. The nitrous is key. Use nitrous and fluttering the gas to stop yourself from hitting the walls, and brakes if you have to. Once I started using nitrous in the drifts, I want from getting about 10k on a good drift on the first corners to getting 15k or more, and being able to more easily control the car and nail more drifts.
I did 2 runs once I figured out the drift. The first run I had maybe 210k at the tunnel. I had 340 at the end, but time also ran out with .5 miles left. The second run, I had 250k by the tunnel, and I hit the wall losing 20k on the 360º drift. I ended the run with less than 5 seconds left, and 380k.
nitrous is key.
here's a video of a later run, where I broke 400k:
- Go to the "GYMKHANA" event titled "Mental Block (Hard)"
- Avoid using the e-brake drifts, they’re slow and get you less points, also avoid walls at all costs, they can end a good combo real quick
- The more points you can build before the city the better, points are harder to come by in there
- Compare your totals at the Roundabout and the Tunnel to see how well your doing, here’s what I had... ROUNDABOUT -> 120,000pts | TUNNEL -> 209,000pts
It will take a few tries to get comfortable with this game's tough driving mechanics that at times can have a mind of it's own locking drifts, not drifting when you want etc. , but you do start to get a feel for how the car handles so practice makes perfect for this cheev
First, it's not just you, yes this games vehicle physics are f***ing awful.
I really struggled keeping kens car in a straight line but was pretty good at keeping it sideways, however I timed out constantly about 6 checkpoints short because I was too busy keeping 'er lit.
My solution here is to get to the tunnel with 230k points, very doable imo. In my run I hit the wall a few times before the tunnel and came out with 374k at the end of the race.
Remember to pump LT before the turn, then smash RT to swing her out, if its feeling shallow and like you're going to hit the outer wall, use the handbrake and nitrous to keep you off.
I can't stress enough how useful it is just letting go of the trigger to avoid hitting barriers and to straighten the car back up.
When you come out of a drift the car will slightly crab in the direction you were drifting, I.e you were going round a right hander, so all of the inertia is throwing you left to the outside wall, when you leave the drift make sure you over compensate and steer toward the inner wall to counter the crab walk.
I should also mention contrary to real life, hitting the nitrous will help straighten you out even when you let off the gas, also useful.
Last but not least take some time to get use to throwing the car out on the slight bends in the mountain, don't wait for the big u turns, I was making a good few k just sliding on the slight curves, again, big angle, nitrous to keep you off the outer wall, over compensate on the exit to avoid crabbing into the wall.
In the city, you'll enter via a barrier and head right, then into an s bend past some buildings and then back out through a gate into an immediate right hander followed by a left. This is a massive left with a full open and almost always empty road, when leaving the last gate go hard round the left hander for big points, then focus on speed from here whilst racking up what you can in the smaller turns.
Towards the last few checkpoints their is a huge sweeping right hander into an open lorry loading bay, the area is awash with red light and its maybe checkpoint 80+ on the track, again hit this huge, at the end of the straight through the lorry loading area is a tight u turn for some decent points followed by a right 90. This is where I tried to have my 350k before a sprint to the finish.
Hope this helps anyone still in need of this.
The Mental Block event is located in Crescent Mountains in the upper portion of the map. Ken's car is available for $0 in the garage after completing all of the Style story missions.
This is a hardest achievement in the Icons Update DLC. But with a little practice it can be achieved. What makes this so difficult is that Ken's car is extremely hard to handle if you have never used a fully tuned for drifting, making the car slide more and making is difficult to straighten out after a drift.
Before attempting the Mental Block event, suggest going into free roam with Ken's car to get a feel on how Ken's car handles. Also it is best to play alone, because having other players in the game can interfere with you. To do this select > Settings > Game Settings > Play Alone.
Try to get most of your score from the mountain sections, which is the first half of the course. Maintaining a good angle and keeping your speed up, should get you 10-12k per drift. Once you enter the city section of the course, there will be less room for big drifts, but at the same time some opportunities for high scores. You'll want to at least have 200k when you get to the tunnel. If you do not have at least 200k by the time you reach the tunnel, it's probably worth it to restart. There really isnt any room for errors.
Tips:
- Use the brakes to initiate drifts and avoid using the e-break too much as this slows down the car.
- Releasing or slightly tapping the gas will help you gain control of your car while trying to straighten out after a drift.
- Do your best to not hit any walls or other cars, especially in the mountain section. Even bumping lighlty into a wall can cause you lose speed and all of your points.
