How to unlock the Safety First achievement in Neon Abyss - Definitive Guide

How to make this achievement a little easier:
1 - Start from a new save file
2 - Complete the tutorial and go back to the bar
3 - Change the difficulty to easy, now you will have easy with three points
4 - Start and die two or more times, this will lower the difficulty to easy with a point
5 - Completing level one without taking damage, in this difficulty should be easy
6 - If you take damage at level two, three, four or five pause the game and return to the main menu
7 - From the main menu select Continue and you will return to the beginning of the level where you received damage
I can confirm that doing this the achievement still pop
I hope this helps
Sorry for my english I'm spanish

The fourth point about dying a few times to make it even easier is no joke. I didn't do this and struggled for hours with probably over 50 level resets back to main menu before completing it.

Then, when I went for no items on Argus achievement I tried dying three times and did a first try no hit run with no items with no level resets. I WAS SPEECHLESS!

This achievement is a bit misleading as you actually cannot take ANY damage (Hearts or Armour). This means you must complete a no hit run of the game.

The best way to do this is to start a brand new game, finish the tutorial, head back to the bar and set the difficulty to easy then give it a run. I'd recommend the starting character Wade as his bomb and key mean you have more early options.

As you can't take any hits there isn't any point to getting hearts or armour so spend your coins or other things like more keys and grenades. Eggs are ok but pets like Jack can cause issues throwing around lots of bombs and Vibrant Ball can block both enemies and your shots which can be dangerous. For items you want to look for ones that increase your weapon damage, rate of fire or give you benefits the more hearts/armour/coins you have. Look out for Turtle Hat (May prevent damage taken from behind) & Devil's Trade (Take no damage or double). You can also go for Athena deals and the items she can offer (Divinity & Pegasus) that allows you to fly which helps a lot with dodging. In terms of weapons, Guardian is great as it can give you guardian sprites that block a hit. Also look out for weapons with homing (Famine & Sentinel) as you can then just fire and focus on dodging.

Eventually the game will start to get harder (Enemies taking more hits, new enemies etc) so at that point just reset the file and try again. You could also spend any of the bar coins on getting free items before the run but this only helps so far.

Thanks to those in the TA thread for helping put together how to unlock this and good luck!

Haven't started this game yet.
How long does a full run take?
What do you mean when you said to reset the file and try again when enemies get harder? Are you saying that the longer you take the harder enemies become so you should go quickly?
And I saw some people talking about shields. Are shields different than armor and can those be damaged and still get the unlock?

@ICE Faux Pirate
- A full run at the start is 5 levels and goes up to 9 when all bosses are unlocked. Takes about 30-40 mins for the base run.
- The game appears to slowly up the difficulty the more runs you start not just complete (For instance an enemy that takes 2 hits to kill will take 4 after a few runs) no matter the difficulty setting. New, harder enemies will also appear.
- You can take your time on a run but after a around 5-7 runs (Completed or failed) on the save file you should clear it and reset to the start.
- Shields are the armour I mentioned in the post. You cannot take a single hit that does damage to your hearts or shields.

@koldsned I haven't played this either. So you get the achievement after 5 levels if you haven't unlocked those bosses? Also anyone have any thoughts on the difficulty of this game compared to say Enter the Gungeon?

@The Allslayer The achievement is for completing a run without taking a hit. The first run is 5 levels but beating that run unlocks a 6th level. Beating that unlocks a 7th etc up to 8 levels. So it's best to have not killed the 5th level boss so each run is as short as it can be.

I'd say this game is harder than Gungeon mostly due to glitches that end your run, no mid run save, rough enemy spawns and very slow meta progression. There is a PC patch and beta branch with some improvements and I'm waiting until that hits xbox before trying to finish it up.

I was considering grinding the first four levels on a new file to unlock Matt. His roll is so useful for avoiding damage, that I figured whatever increase in difficulty came from the upgrades, the advantage would still be worth it. Only 32 gems are needed to unlock Matt, which wouldn't actually take that long. I managed to get this in like 12 attempts, so no need, but I thought I would share the idea if it helps anyone.

The game will continue to get harder after about 5 to 6 runs through. No matter what you do. I have every achievement on Enter The Gungeon, and this game definitely matches that difficulty. I got this achievement last night and it's honestly about luck and a lot of skill. The devil deal (chance to take double damage or no damage) saved me a few times so look for it. You will get frustrated with this achievement no matter how good you are, good luck.

How the hell is anybody gonna get this? It’s so easy to get hit.

There is a patch on the way apparently. This could easily be done with R-6 but as the OP said the Achievement is misleading. Me and many others have contacted them to fix this so lets keep are fingers crossed.

The patch doesn’t do anything for this achievement btw. PC players on the latest patch still have to not get hit for it. It’s fairly achievable with a few attempts.

EDIT: Also, I used quick restart for my runs and didn’t notice an increase in difficulty after subsequent runs.

Ok got round to trying this on my alt and beat the god of darknet getting the first light achievement then you're back at bar. So you just have to do that without getting hit? Hate to sound like "that guy" but that doesn't seem that difficult, I didn't even come close to dying and barely knew what I was doing laugh

@The Allslayer that's funny since you still don't have this achievement and quite a few others in this game. Only 44 people have this including me, so obviously this isn't that easy. Randomness in this game is huge and getting hit once nullifies the achievement entirely. Stop acting big.

That was a first impression from 1 run and if it wasn't clear I meant compared to Gungeon, obviously it's not easy. But yes after playing more I would agree this achievement makes Neon Abyss (in it's current broken state) a harder completion than Gungeon. Hopefully the patch fixes most of the issues, shit if getting hit by a boss before you can even move is fixed I'll be happy even if nothing else get's fixed.

I decided to not upgrade anything at all, quickly find boss room, kill and repeat. If I found yellow room I checked the item and took nothing, but before 3rd boss I found Pegasus allowing me to fly and making things easier. So I did it with stock gun without any upgrades and it was easy. Took me 40 attempts maybe, but only 10-15 with stock quickrun.

I’d like to add that pick-ups that give you a shell, like the Jewelry Box, will give you a buffer. Shells do not count toward hits.

About the game getting harder, I've only noticed that after I spend my bar coins past the hidden room, which you can unlock from just the tutorial.

I just did ~40 runs on a single save file and the enemies never got progressively tankier, until I tried to use the bar coins on that next slotted upgrade. Hitting a quick restart after getting hit seemed to work the whole time up until those next coins were invested. I've even quick restarted from the starting room to start with a shop, challenge room, or item room connected without feeling any increase in enemy health.

Once you get to level 2 you can just exit out of the game as soon as you take damage then continue from the beginning of the floor you took damage on.

My advice, start a new profile and keep restarting on the first floor till you get some decent items. Try to get an Athena deal going before you fight anything. With a little luck you can get an Athena deal on the first floor. Get to level 2 and just either rush the bosses if confident in your build or clear for max loot. Keep track of how many hearts and shields you have when you enter a room because it's pretty easy to not notice when you've lost shields. If you get hit, exit the game and then just continue from the beginning of the floor you got hit on and try again. Much easier when you can take it one floor at a time.

As the description says, you need to finish a run without taking a single hit of damage (whether it be to hearts or shields). This is one of the hardest achievements in the game, but there are actually some things you can do to make this far easier than it otherwise would be, making it pretty manageable for even average gamers.

First, do this on a new save file. From the main menu, choose Save Slot and pick an empty one. The reason for this is because you want your run to only consist of the first five floors. After you beat Argus, the run is six floors, and after Hal, seven floors. You want the run to be as short as possible.

Second, play through the tutorial (remap the controls if need be), obviously choose Easy difficulty, and after you beat the boss, quit back to the bar.

Third, and this is extremely IMPORTANT, go kill yourself in two runs on Easy. This will drop the difficulty from Easy with three dots to Easy with one dot, if you look at the difficulty poster in the bar. The more dots above the difficulty, the harder the game is. Dying takes dots away, so kill yourself twice to drop it from three dots to one dot. You can now play Easy one dot, which is the easiest difficulty in the game.

With the setup done, you now need to beat each floor without getting hurt. While this is no walk in the park, it's far, far easier on Easy one dot. Enemies barely pay you any attention, and bosses aren't very aggressive. Since you can't get hurt for this achievement, focus all of your items and boss drops on attack strength. Don't pick up heart containers, always go for gun and damage upgrades, and take any items that improve damage. You want to make boss fights as quick as possible to reduce the likelihood of getting hit.

It should go without saying, but if you do get hit at all, use the Save Reload Exploit to start the floor over again. Layout, enemies, boss, items, etc., don't change, allowing you to learn and improve each time you have to retry a floor. If you find a room or two to be an absolute pain to clear without getting hit, don't bother with that room (if you can avoid it and get to the boss a different route). Most bosses will be very quick and easy on this difficulty and with upgrades. George can be a pain in the beginning with the projectiles he shoots, and the Goddess of Makeup can be annoying if your range isn't enough to reach her while still safe across the room, but all other bosses are pretty simple to learn their attack patterns and avoid them. Boss fights shouldn't take more than a minute or so on this difficulty, so you don't have to dodge for long.

The fight against Argus will be the hardest part of this run. You definitely want to get as many upgrades as you're comfortable with along the way in previous floors, because that'll make this fight as short as possible. The first phase of this fight is pretty easy to do without getting hit, but those tentacle wire things in the second phase give you virtually no time to react and can ruin things. Hopefully, with enough upgrades through your run, you only need to dodge the wires for two or so cycles before you finish him off. Some luck is almost required here, hoping you get a good wire pattern that's easy to avoid in a split second. Expect to have to restart this floor a few times to nail it, but once you do, you'll unlock this achievement.

Slightly incorrect description of the trophy. To get it you need to complete the race without taking any damage at all!
You cannot lose both hearts and shields. The easiest way is to do it on a new save slot, so there will be 5 locations instead of 8-9.

If you are looking for random damage, you can use the cloud or restart the level after forcefully closing the game. You'll start at the last level.
Also: if you're lucky, buy the Eighth Color cannon. With at least the slightest set of damage items, it simply works wonders. In general, in this run, bet on burst damage. Because some bosses are very random and it is better to immediately shave off their health before the second phase than to catch a random hit.
