If someone wants to confirm whether or not this carries over to new games, please let me know. I just ended up doing it in one run to be safe. After each level, you have the option to use your scrap to forge items. Select the top option to forge any random item. If it's not gold, sell it to get more scrap back. If it is gold, equip it and continue running through the levels.
