How to unlock the By Your Side achievement in Neverwinter - Definitive Guide

Easy Way - Linking your account
When you first start up the game, you'll be asked to link your account to an Arc Games account. You can then push a button to bring up Internet Explorer straight to this site. Once you make an account or log in to your current one, you'll just have to push the link button.

Once in game, work through the tutorial. When you get to town, hold cn_LB and hit cn_up to bring up the map (or pause, go to Quests, and choose Local Map). Look for the picture of a gift box. It's in the NorthWest corner of the map. Go to this merchant and then use the triggers to scroll to 'Promo'.
Renegade Illusionist should be available for use.

Next, go to your inventory (hold cn_LB and hit cn_left or pause game). He will be in your Items bag. Select him and choose 'Bind'. You will have to enter a name for him. Once you have done this the achievement will unlock.

Other Route
If you don't want to do this, you can earn a companion by leveling up. Once you hit 16 (which I would suggest you do through questing), you will receive a quest to earn a companion. This quest will be given by General Knox or by selecting 'Special Quests' from the pause menu when you hit 16. This quest will give you a tutorial on companions so it's nice to do this even if you use the above guide. At the end of this quest you get a choice of 4 companions, then you just bind it like above.

Downvoters please comment.

Just started this today, no companion in the promo section for that merchant. Guess it was limited? No down vote, not your fault I'm late to the party laugh

If you signed into the game and the linking your account thing popped up it would have told you if it rewards the character.

If you did all this then I don't know what to tell you. I haven't seen anything else saying they cancelled it.

Yeah that was the first place I checked to make sure I wasn't doing anything stupid. All I see with the merchant is a couple of horses and a hat under promo. Got on to their support to look into it. Don't care about this as I can get the achievement later but more for the fact my account may not be linked correctly and cause issues down the road.

Update>: Support were very helpful, they added the companion to my account a couple of hours after I contacted them. There was an issue with my account linking correctly so if anyone else has the same problem get on to them and they will fix it pretty quickly for you.

No luck. It already says my account is linked. Why is it that I always struggle with these kind of achievements.

If you link your xbox account to arc games account you will get free companion that you can collect from reward claims agent after you complete mission rags to riches. You find your companion (Renegade illunionist) from promo section.

To get achievement you have to use companion from your items (choose bind?) and give name for it. After that you can use it by pressing menu and choosing companions under character. After that press cn_X to summon it.

If you don't want to link your account you will get free companion from mission care & feeding. you get care & feeding after finishing mission a companion that you get from sgt. Knox. I got this quest after finishing Fists of the Warband.

Ok - I found it - the companion is in your inventory, and you need to bind it.

Companions can be bought later in the game. I don't know when at what level exactly but it's not a missable achievement, you can even drop companions as a rare loot.

How about you make a solution that isn't dependent on a free promotional item that will not be given out for ever? Maybe something about completing the special quest you get at lv 16?

Or even have actual help on what to look for in your inventory after you accept the promo kit? Or maybe how to bind the follower? Possibly how to summon him afterwards?

Yeah, I linked my account, claimed the companion from the claims agent, but no achievement. There's something missing in the solution. SneakyStabbalot suggested the companion needs to be "binded" --- binded to what and how do you do that?

To bind the companion just click on it when it appears in your inventory (after claiming it from the rewards guy in the main city) and it will ask you to rename it, once done - achievement unlocked

For anyone looking for the claims agent; once you get your peasant gear turn around and you'll see a guy between some pillars with a gift box hovering over his head. Talk to him and then move to the promo tab and grab the Renegade illunionist.

This trophy unlocks when you equip a Companion from your inventory. You can either buy a Companion from the Protector's Enclave merchant/Trade House/Zen Marketplace, get the limited time promotional Companion by linking your PSN ID to your Arc Games account, or complete the special quest at lvl 16 "A Companion" to get a free one.

companion is a computer controlled 'AI' that will accompany you during your journeys and quests through the world of Neverwinter. They come in all shapes and sizes and some are a greater benefit to you depending on what class you have chosen to play. Your companion can die, but they can also be revived by the player or simply resummoned.
At level 16 there is "A Companion" quest given out by Sergeant Knox which will give you a choice of companions; Cleric Disciple, Man at arms, Wayward Wizard, and a Dog. Each has specific talents so choose wisely. Companions can also be purchased from a vendor, or found as rare drops in the world of Neverwinter.

Some can only be purchased in the "Zen Market" for real world money. By level 60 you can have up to five 'active' companions in the menu. Only one companion is summoned at any given time; but the benefits of the others will add to your stats. If you linked your account with Arc and got the free Renegade Illusionist, you can unlock the achievement by 'binding' the companion to you; and then summoning him before level 16.

When you link your account when you first enter the game, you are given a companion and a mount. You can pick it up from the reward keeper. Print it in your inventory and get the trophy.

If you don’t want to bother with linking your account, then at level 16 Sergeant Knox will give you a simple task.
Once completed, you will be given a free companion to choose from.

If you linked an account on the website when you first started the game, you can get a companion in the Protectorate from the Reward Agent with a gift icon, in the northern part of the map.

We select the companion in the “Promotions” tab. In my case it was the Renegade Illusionist. Go to inventory and click "link". Give your companion a name and the achievement is yours!
