How to unlock the A Goalie Pro achievement in NHL 09 - Definitive Guide

Create a goalie with 99 overall, and put it on a team. Pick that player in NHL Be a Pro. Difficulty should be PRO. I had period length at 8 minutes. That's more than enough time to get the required 10 shots per period.

Change the gameplay sliders, put everything down to 0 except shot accuracy (so they will actually shoot on net, missed shots dont count as saves) and penalties (your team in the box = more shots for you to save). These should be maxed. I also had goalie cover frequency maxed out, to help with Team Play.

When all of your settings are changed, save the file. This is because you need to get the A rating on your first game, otherwise it will average out the ratings from the previous games. So if you don't get the A rating, you'll want to replay that first game. You should turn off auto-save, or you can simply quit to dashboard if you finish the game, instead of quitting to the menus.

Position: When the blue arrow appears, you should position yourself, so its between your legs.

Team Play: Making lots of saves helps. Also, if you cover the puck, then pass it to your defenceman, that helps.

Stats: Based on your save percentage. I had 1 goal on 42 shots for a B+ rating. Since my Position and Team Play were A+, this averaged out to an A and got me the achievement.

A trick you can do to force them to shoot the puck from the blueline, giving you an easy save: Move off to the side when they are coming into your end. They will take a low shot to the net, all you have to do is move over and block it. Be careful though, this will affect your position rating, so if your position rating isn't A+, you'll want to work on positioning before forcing the shot.

Biggest thing you need for this achievement is patience. I must have played 20 games before I finally got it. The computer will score quite a few cheese goals, and sometimes your defender will throw it in your net.

Generally a good solution, but I don't understand the "required 10 shots per period" bit. I just got this achievement with a shutout on a total of 18 shots on goal (5 min periods).

I did this and no achievement. I'm also having trouble with the winger pro. I've gotten and overall A grade in several games and nothing? I know it is set to pro I've checked a few times now.

Great solution... especially the part about the "overall" needing to be an A. That's where I think my problem has been.

Another way to look at it might be to change the roster of your first opponent to have terrible players, before you load up Be A Pro for the first time.

This is a pain in the backside but there is a easier way to get this.

Pick the Canucks as your NHL be a pro, NOT normal be a pro. Choose to play as Luongo and get to the calender and select settings from the menu.

Put Shoting accuracy/power slider all the way down along with the pasing sliders. Also set the game speed to its lowest.

You can also change the puck friction setting but it shouldnt affect the game that much.

After this simply keep a shut out, easier said than done, but doable with the sliders set so they are weak shots. They will still get the easy goals so keep alert. Other than that there isn't much to it. 5 minute periods will be enough to face around 10 shots

Remember you need to have difficutly on Pro. Took me about three attempts with these settings.

Did your passes always go to your players? You need to pass the puck well also aswell as the shutouts. Cannot give you much more advice im afraid.

I didnt even change the settings and got 3 shutouts in a row but continue to get a B- in the "Stats" category even though i have stopped all 33 shots I faced in those 3 games. It's ridiculous

When you start the game, go to Game Modes, Be A Pro, NHL Pro. here, you want to select a good goalie like Luongo or the guy I picked - Nabokov. Start a season with your goalie and change the sliders so that shot power is down and shot accuracy is up. I left game speed the same. Your goal is to win with a shutout and stop about 15 shots or so ( I won in a shutout and stopped 8 shots and got an A- ). It is a good idea to pass the puck to your teammates when you get it as this seems to help team play. If you are scored on, exit the game and repeat. If you think you've got it and you complete the game but DON'T get it, you have to start a new pro season, since that game will bring down your stats in the next game etc. Took me about 3.5 hours as I kept getting scored on in the third period. For shots, penalties are your friend. I found that in 5 on 5 my team always dominated. But on the PK I got like 6 or 7 shots per penalty. You can turn the penalties slider up if you like. ** Again, this is how I got the achievement personally. Others may differ, either way, I hope it helps you out!

This achievement is a pain in the ass and does require a fair bit of skill and luck.

I know you don't want to hear that so I'm going to explain how I easily unlocked A Goalie Pro in NHL 09.

1: I went with Luongo on NHL Pro since I read the top solution.

2: I put it on Superstar difficulty because I was hardly getting any chances for saves on Pro and Allstar difficulty. My Ai teammates were defending too well and I was only getting between 10-18 shots a game, on 5, 7 AND 10 min period lengths.

3: So period length doesn't help, I can confirm that. That's why I switched it to Superstar. Now, the only sliders you should change before you start the game are Shooting Power and Shooting Accuracy. Both down to the LEFT which is zero. Everything else will help the CPU get more crappy shots on you. I went with 7 minute period length just to be safe.

4: Stats: Those settings will make the shots coming easy enough but remember your own skill and luck play their roles each time the CPU sets up in your zone. I got scored on the most from wrap a rounds and opponents that had it behind the net coming across, so pay attention there the most. Outside shots just make sure you don't SLIDE across when it's along the ice because your 5 hole opens up. Rack up a LOT of saves for this category and avoid goals against and thats pretty much it. You DON'T need a shutout. There isn't much of a difference between all the difficulties. Just more shots against you on Superstar level.

5: Position Score: It's easy just stay in the BLUE lines.

6: Team Play: Safely pass to teammates and make "Big Saves".

I got this with:

Position Score: A+
Team Play: A+
Stats: B+
38/40 save percentage for the Win.

Overall after being an "A", NOT A- wont work I can confirm.

Remember to give this a thumbs up if it helped you and comment for questions.

You can win this achievement in Be A Pro Mode, Just Start a Career as a Goalie and in your first Game of the Season you need to achieve an A Overall rating. If you don't achieve it your best off starting a new career as it will only unlock this achievement on your average overall ranking for that career.

This requires you to score at least an "A" grade not just overall but in all three catagories; Stats, Teamplay and Position score. The difficulty has to be set on at least Pro difficulty but you can adjust sliders accordingly. MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF THE AUTO SAVE!

You can use either your own Be A Pro character or use someone already in the NHL using NHL Be A Pro. Pick a player, get through the introduction and all the way to the first game. Now, save your profile and season. At this point, sim the first game and if you get all A's in EVERY catagory play the next game. It doesn't matter how well you do or if you are the goalie how many shots get in. The achievement should pop just as the game completes. If you don't get all A's simply reload your file and try again.

I would like to add that after simming your all A's grade for your game, DO NOT SAVE just play the next game. I could have saved myself the headache had I just played the next game instead of saving it.

A more in-depth explanation from Jrath05 can be found here.

Thanks to xMidget_Furyx and Jrath05 for the clarification on this achievement.
