How to unlock the EA Sports™ Hockey League Legend achievement in NHL 09 - Definitive Guide
WARNING: EA servers for this game are shutting down on Feb 8 2011

This may be an easier way, especially if you have 2 people working toward their card.
Both players play LW (no faceoffs, even on PK), and both keep pulling their goalie (LB+Back). Make sure both players get 1 goal, 1 assist, although we occasionally settled for 2 goals, or just 1 point.
Other than that, stay in position the best you can, get hits when you're sure you won't get a penalty, and try your best not to turnover the puck.
Quit every game after 5 minutes, or once each player has their points. Doing this method kept me going back and forth between B+/A- overall, and went by very quick.

Create a game in OTP lobby, and have your friend quickly join. Each take one side and ready up. This will start the game, hopefully before anyone else gets in. One person plays goalie, the other forward. If you're good on the face-off take center, but otherwise take a wing so as not to lose team stats by losing the face off. The forward should try to concentrate on not giving the puck away and position, poke check/hit if possible. The person playing G moves out of the net, allowing the other to score 3 quick goals (2 and 1 assist is ok as well). Once the game hits the 5 minutes played mark and the forward has 3 points, the goalie quits. The forward's stats are boosted, and he gets credit for the win/game played as long as it's after 5 minutes. The other person's goalie stats take a hit, but this doesn't affect their forward. Basically, you're dropping your goalie, but raising your forward, which is all you need. I brought my friend up from B- to A- and his card within about 25 games. This is by far the quickest way I've found to boost stats, and speed up games played as well. Your DNF doesn't seem to track OTP games, as mine still says 4% (which is from Ranked vs. games). 8)

This achievement is no longer available. Original solution:

Unlocks after you completed all online cards. Just try to play as many games as possible with your team and perform well. You can also check your requirements for each Hockey League rank/card from "Main Menu > Performance tracker," and by pressing RB to switch from offline to online ranks.
The requirement you need to get the online Legend Card is an A- and 150 games. The previous cards will unlock as long as you play games and maintain at least an A-.

I have a question. Is this done through joining a "quick otp" game. And when I am playing should it be my created character because i find i keep ending up playing nhlers on the selected team instead. thanks

Play with your created character and quick OTP does work towards this achievement.

Before the servers close;
All the solutions above (or below) are great, but as the servers are almost due to be closed, I just have a small, but VERY important detail to share with you (this is not really a solution, but rather an important note before the servers close to be considered):
I assume that many gamers will now try to get the online achievement "EA Sports™ Hockey League Legend" and later on the "Be A Pro Legend" achievement, which you can get offline.
Now, this is not a problem, however, if you also want the "Complete Legend" achievement (description: "As the lead NHL® 09 Profile unlock both the Be A Pro and EA Sports™ Hockey League Legend cards"), then you do NOT only need to unlock both achievements (as many solutions suggest in that guide), but also to have ALL the CARDS (as the description clearly says).
So, to cut a long story short, MAKE SURE that at the end of your online career you got at least an overall A- (and have unlocked all cards), because if you subsequently lose this grade, you also lose the cards and can't get anymore the last achievement....

Here's the easiest solution possible. Me and my friend figured this out by accident when we created a room to practice. If you're at or near the 150 mark, go to lobbies and create a game in a room for only 3 people and do a 1v1. Have player 1 (the one who needs the card) be the LW and player 2 be the RD. As soon as the game starts, the person who needs to get to the A- needs to score 1 goal and get 2 assists. This will help stats and team play. The easiest way to do this is to have player 2 pull the goalie and have player 1 score quickly.
Now, after you have scored both ways, have player 2 get control of the puck and stand behind his own net. Player 1 stands in front of the goalie until he is the one designated to "defend" player 2. This helps with positioning. Do this until the game is over. To pad some team play stats, get a few hits and/or takeaways from player 2, but only in the final 10 seconds or each period (to minimize turnovers on your part).
At the end of the game, player 1 should have all A-'s or better for their scores. Do this until player 1 gets his legend card. If they are a B+, it shouldn't take any more than 4-6 games.
Hope this helps. Send a F.R. on XBL if you need help with this.

Time's running out on this one due to the servers closing on Feb 8th 2011. I just wanted to post this note real quick, so maybe it will help a few more people boost this achievement before closure day.
Basically, the important thing is that you don't have to blindly search for a buddy and hope it finds him.
Do this instead:
Xbox Live -> Community -> Lobbies ->Game Modes. Scroll down to OTP Lobby.
Have your boosting buddy do the same. When you are both in the lobby, you simply select your buddies name, and hit A. The menu allows you to invite him to a game, which will auto create a game for the two of you. It can even be ranked. He just has to sit there and wait for the invite, and then accept it when he gets it. You are now in a 1v1 ranked OTP match.
Now just play the match and have someone quit after 5 mins, as other solutions have pointed out. I've found that pulling both goalies and having each player score or get an assist before you quit helps your grades. I've been steadily getting a better grade every 10 games or so. I'm at B+ overall now using this method for 87 games. My friend already had 150 games in before we started doing this, and he got his grade from a B- overall to an A- overall in less than 20 games using this method, and it was quick. Make sure you check your Progress tracker from the main menu periodically, as the achievement popped for my friend on that screen, not at the end of a game.
Anyways, after your 5 min quit, it throws you right back into the same lobby (most of the time) and you can just do it again. So this takes less than 30 seconds to get out of a game and right back into a new one. A friend and me played 50 five-min quit games together last night using this method. By the way you can also do this for ranked VS and ranked shootouts by going to their respective lobby instead of OTP.
Hope some people read this and it saves them some time. If so leave me some thumbs.
