How to unlock the HUT Playoff Contender achievement in NHL 11 - Definitive Guide
This achievement appears to be unobtainable at the moment. If it were obtainable, this would be how to do it.
The first part of getting this achievement is simply starting a HUT team. That's pretty straightforward and will be done for you once you select Hockey Ultimate Team from the main menu.
Once you're team is ready, it's up to you to play and, hopefully win, some online games. If you're in for the long hall, the best way to build your team is to play offline for awhile first. Use the players you get in your intro pack to win a few low level, offline tournaments and build up a collection of pucks as you go. Use those to buy Peewee packs. Any rare or exceptional players you get should be saved for the time being. Once your team starts looking a little bit more like an NHL team, players averaging in the 80's, you can try your luck online.
To actually qualify for a monthly playoff is easier than it seems. Their are three different levels to qualify in and it doesn't take very many wins to make it into the lowest bracket. There is no definitive number, but you can check your current ranking in your stats from the main HUT menu. A safe number to aim for on that leaderboard is 600 or more. Rumor is that the top 5k players on the leaderboards get in so some months are harder than others. There may also be other factors involved, so nothing is a given when it comes to getting in. Starting on the 1st of every month, are the HUT playoffs. You MUST sign into HUT and select the playoff option to see if you qualified. If you do not do this, you will not receive the achievement even if you are the best player in the world.
For those who don't mind boosting, simply match up with a friend in some tournaments or ranked matches and win some games. This is faster to do than it initially seems. The player who is getting the win needs to score a goal and then the second player can quit out as soon as the clock hits 17:59. When you win around 10 games with no loses, you should have no issues getting into the playoffs at the beginning of the next month. You can always return the favor for the following month. This is best done with as many different players as possible. The folks at EA know people boost so multiple wins against the same opponent begin to count for less.
As an ongoing project, I'd like people to submit their online leaderboard points when they made the playoffs so that we can try to generate a number.
Cheers!

According to a couple of friends who have been in contact with EA, what's happening is that the stats reset for the next month is happening seconds before the calculations for qualifying are being made. Essentially this means that everyone is showing 0 points when the system goes to determine who should make the playoffs, therefore not qualifying anyone at all. This issue was caused with a patch and EA "tried to fix it" but "couldn't find a solution." Basically it sounds like even though they are well aware of the problem, they've already made their money on the game and really could care less about some people not being able to unlock 1 achievement from their list. I've spent time at EA Sports headquarters in Vancouver before, and I can honestly say that this doesn't surprise me. They simply don't care about their customers, even though we're the ones that put food on their tables. The perks of having a monopoly with the sports genre!

Hey guys,
We are aware that there have been some issues with users not qualifying for playoffs when they should have. A fix is on the way and we're currently testing. We hope to have it deployed in time for next month's playoffs.
Thanks again for your patience and support.
Cheers,
Hockey Live Team
So hopefully they have this fixed by the time the September playoffs start.
Heres a link in case they update us.

their is a suprise they locked that thread already. Well now I can finally sell this game. This is sad too because I loved NHL 10 so much I figured I would buy NHL 11 even though the achievements looked tough. And I was right they were long and time consuming and hell even one unobtainable one. Now when I think about buying a future EA NHL game this one will always cause me to hesitate . Good job EA you have done it again and again and again and again. Its amazing how a company can get away with releasing a game and then almost immediatly moving on to something else. I also loved how they posted that they were working on fixing this achievement and then nothing is fixed.

From what I've read, it's either having a good record, or being in a top percentage of players. I'm actually surprised when I went on NHL 11 today. I have played the past week in HUT, and having a few friends help me boost a few wins. My record was 33-4-0 (including offline). This month was very difficult considering there were only about 2000 players. I've read on other pages you have to be in the top 50% of players (so top 1000 this month), and on other pages read it's a different %, but anyway, EA screwed many of us over, once again.
****TIPS****
Play A LOT of offline tournaments, racking up 3000 points easily per hour (2nd offline tournament, roughly 300 points per game, and a 2000 puck bonus if you win it.)
DONT buy from EA store, instead bid on players you need. I found numerous good mid-high 80's, and 90 players for under 3000 pucks each

So this is still obtainable?

Yes, however it will be very hard as less and less players play.

For this achievement you will need to be somewhere around the top 20% of the monthly leaderboards. You will need 500+ rank points in order to be ranked around 10,000. If you only play 2 games and win both, there is a good chance you could have enough points. Boosting against the same account for 5 games will get you a little over 100 rank points, but after 5 games you will be getting 0. You can check rank points by viewing the HUT monthly leaderboards. Luckily if you qualify at the end of the month, your done. The achievement unlocks right in the playoff menu. But if you miss it, you MUST wait until the next month to try again.

My opinion is that you need to play at least 30 games in hut mode within a month. no matter where the single is, the cup. Most importantly, online and play in full. depending on the result. you will be in pl of or elite or friend. and then go to the play area and play the game.

I advanced to PO by playing 23 games, winning 16 of them. In total I had about >600 points and my team took 2300th place.
