How to unlock the Coaching Royalty achievement in NHL 20 - Definitive Guide
Finally, got it after about 40+ different simulations.
At first I tried just taking random teams like Blue Jackets, Ducks, Knights, etc....and simming the first three years. No avail. Random teams kept winning it Red Wings, Blackhawks, Canucks, Wild, Kings, Avalanche....
Next I tried stacking the Golden Knights, I kept winning the cup and having 65+ win season. Nothing.
Next I tried a method someone put out for PS4 trophies on this achievement. The method was as follows:
1) Go to the roster on the main hub and stack the Ottawa Senators since they were awful last year.
2) Start up a new classic franchise picking the Senators, you can turn off whatever settings you want just make sure salary cap is off.
3) Fired the head coach, promoting the AHL assistant coach (C-; might vary) to the NHL head coach.
4) Sim to post playoffs when the awards are giving out in June.
5) Bleep bloop, if not rinse and repeat the 2019-2020 season.
I tried the method above multiple times, but never got to step 5 and was noticing the Ducks for some reason kept getting the Jack Adams trophy the first year. I tried again, this time I left the stacked Ottawa team and picked the Ducks and never fired my coach. On my third attempt at the 2019-2020 season (restart each time, not going to the next season. My Ducks had about 40+ win, got second in the division and we went 1-4 in the first round of the playoffs and it popped June 1 after the Stanley Cup champions message popped up.
This seems to be a pretty luck based and random achievement, but I wanted to share the methods I attempted and maybe others will have better luck or get it on the first attempt.
Another method I saw but never attempted was this one: Create a new franchise with the 32nd expansion team. Pick that team and win the Stanley Cup.

I've did the same, stacked the Sens but just got the cheevo @2029 season, had a 71W season, a lot of President trophy, however got the Jack Adams with the second wild card spot in the conference (9th overall in the league). Talk about a random achievement haha.

Stacking the Sens worked first try for me. Thx for the guide

I tried the other guides posted here and was unsuccessful. I felt like I was wasting time trying to get lucky and hope that my coach was chosen for the Jack Adams.
I found this guide, got it first try. Lots of other people reporting that they got it first try too. Shoutout to Kiccic from the PSN Profiles community for posting it ( https://forum.psnprofiles.com/topic/79303-any-tips-for-coach... ):

1. Use 11.10.2019 rosters. [October 10th, 2019]
2. New franchise
3. Pick Buffalo Sabres
4. Move your team with other week teams to Pacific division. (I put Senators in Meteopolitian div. With all good Teams, just in case:) )
5. Waivers on, cap space on, couch edit lines on, Owner mode off, Morale off, cpu trades off, all notifications off, injury off...
6. Do nothing with your staff, just sim entire season. If lucky, and you are in top3, in your division, you will get Jack. Adams trophy.
Hope it brings you success!2. New franchise

Wish I could upvote this to the top solution. Worked on the third try. Seemed to help to also make the other western division weak as well.

Worked on second try. Missed the playoffs on first try.

Achievement seems to be entirely random. I've done about 20 seasons simulated from start to finish, I've had record-setting seasons of 62+ wins where I won the Stanley Cup, I've had teams completely over-achieve and make it to the playoffs despite no reason to do so, I've won the cup with the 32nd team and still haven't won the Adams trophy. It seems to be an achievement that's as much on luck as everything else although from the multiple seasons that I've seen the teams that win it the most are teams who aren't juggernauts in the standings normally.
New Jersey, Carolina, Las Vegas, Edmonton, Vancouver, Buffalo have won the Adams trophy the most in my simulations.
EDIT: Couple answers to questions posed by others.
1: The trophy is handed out after the season is over. I simulated until I got the popup that said "Team A won the Stanley Cup, Team B won the Calder Cup" from there go into the statistics area and go under awards and it'll show the most recent winner there.
2: I turned off owner mode, turned off morale and fog of war, made it easier to make snap decisions on trades and not have to worry about chemistry playing a big role. Outside of that I simulated through and skipped pretty much any popup. Took about 5 minutes to simulate through a full season.

At what point in the season would this achievement unlock? Also how do you see which team won it after the season is over?
By GBCheesehead on 05 Oct 2019 02:35
I am curious of this as well. I just finished a season with 65 wins and no achievement.
By Jon Clink 96 on 05 Oct 2019 02:45
I don't know for sure what the game looks at for the Jack Adams trophy, but I think it has to do with having a low-rated head coach and making the playoffs/winning the cup with him because I got this achievement and all the other Franchise Mode achievements in my first try/season as the 32nd Franchise. This is how I did it:
I followed Jon Clink 96's Cup Champs solution and I edited the rosters to remove all the 85+ OVR players from each NHL team before starting franchise mode by moving them all into free agency. I also moved over all the 85+ OVR Alumni players from the Alumni All-Star team to really bolster the free agency options.
Now take note of the Top 5 Goalies, Top 15 Defensemen, & Top 30 Forwards by OVR (total of 50 players). These are your chosen 50, you'll need them later.
I then moved a bunch of 40-60 OVR players from other leagues to free agency. You need a lot so try to move as many as you can. You can do this by trading all the top players from free agency that are not part of your chosen 50 to these other low-level teams to circumvent their minimum 18 skater requirement. This also makes it so that Free Agency has 50 superstar players and the rest are crap.
What you need to do next is move the crappy players from free agency to all the NHL teams (apart from the All-Star teams) to max out each roster and limit them from having room to add new contracts. If you can, max out their goalies too, each team is allowed to have 5. This whole process will take you a little while, but if you want to avoid simming 40+ times like some of the other people in the solutions here have, then it's totally worth it.
Once that's done, go and start up franchise mode with a 32nd franchise with custom rosters. The name, jerseys, etc don't matter.
(VERY IMPORTANT) Edit the settings so that all contracts are extended by 1 extra year to start, no salary cap, easy trade difficulty, the game difficulty is set to rookie, periods are set to 3 mins, injuries are off, the playoffs are single knockout, and whatever other settings there are to make it so that you have minimal involvement and you can sim quicker.
Once it starts up, you'll have to go through the expansion draft. Select the best player possible from each team/players with the highest trade value possible (don't forget about the goalies) and then go to the draft.
When you get to the rookie draft, you can either do as I did and trade your best players/picks to get as many of the top 5 picks as you can to ensure that teams won't get an 80+ player from the draft that they will be able to add to their team instantly & also to fill in the gaps in their rosters or just skip the draft and go to contract resigning (you can also get rid of your players and fill up their rosters later).
Now since you made it so that every player has an extra year added to their contracts, you won't have any contracts to re-sign (not that we would want to re-sign any of our current players anyways) so you can skip ahead to the free agency stage.
(VERY IMPORTANT) Before you sign any players, you want to go into trades and start trading away all your players to other teams. Try to trade to teams with smaller amounts of contracts signed already so that there aren't any teams with less than at least 40 contracts signed. Make sure you're trading your players away for draft picks. You should have 0 contracts by the end of this.
Now you can go into Free Agency and start offering contracts to your chosen 50. Offer every player 1 Mil more than their asking price and keep everything else the same. Sim day by day until you get notifications saying they signed with you. All of them should choose to sign with you, but there might be one or two players that choose to go with a different team for whatever reason, but that's not an issue.
(VERY IMPORTANT) Now, go into your coaching staff screen and fire your head coach. Then, promote your worst rated coach to head coach (mine was the AHL goalie coach who had a rating of D-). Don't worry about filling that coach's position with someone else.
If you haven't already gotten the CHL Scout achievement, you can get it now by going to your scout staff and pressing Y on any scout and changing their region to North America > CHL > WHL, OHL, or QMJHL (you have to change it to one they're not already in). That achievement should pop now.
Now sim to the start of the season. Don't worry about lines or anything, you should have all the top players in the league so it doesn't really matter who plays where. Let the AI decide your lines. Start simming the season. If you did everything right up to this point, your team should have a winning record.
You will get popups, especially at the beginning of the season, from players complaining about their ice-time (which is totally fair when you have 90 OVR players playing on the 4th line and in the AHL lol). Always try to pick the conversation options that limit their morale loss, but don't make any promises about increasing ice time. Pick persuade and tell them it's a team game (or whatever that option actually says) and 7 times out of 10, they will back down.
Keep simming. Later you will start to get popups from players apologizing for their bad performance (I don't get why this is a thing, but whatever). Again, try to limit the amount of morale they lose, but don't make any promises to them.
Keep simming. Throughout the season, you will get popups telling you that other teams have fired their coach. Ignore these for now. Your franchise will also be losing a lot of money, but that won't matter. Neither does repairing/upgrading your arena's facilities either so just ignore all that.
Keep simming. If you handled the players' popups well, you shouldn't run into any morale issues, but there is a chance a player might be too unhappy and request to be traded. Whether or not you trade him is up to you, but I chose to trade him for the top player in the league on another team to avoid any negative repercussions from that player down the road.
Once you get to the playoffs, do not sim any of the games. Make sure you play each one. Since you already set the difficulty to rookie, you can either just play each game to the end or if you want to save time, score a bunch of quick goals so your team has a huge lead (my threshold was 10 goals, but 5 should probably be fine too, 10 is just safer) and then quit. This will sim the rest of the game and if you had a good lead when you do this, there is no chance the other team will catch up to you.
Do this for the Stanley Cup Final game as well and once that game is over, the Cup Champs achievement should pop.
Sim a couple more days and the Coaching Royalty achievement for winning the Jack Adams trophy should pop as well since your D- rated coachtook your team to the finals and won the cup in your franchise's first season. At least that's what I assume the game looks at for that trophy got your team into the playoffs. This is what the game seems to look at for this trophy. (Thanks BradLeafsFan9 for this info!)
Now sim through the draft and contract re-signing and get to the free agency stage. Once you're at that stage, go to your coaching staff and fire your head coach. Then click on hire new coach and there should be an A+ coach available for hire. If you don't have the budget for him, fire some more of your coaches to make room. Once you have enough budget to pay for his asking price, send him an offer and sim a couple more days. Once he accepts your offer, the You're Hired achievement should pop. If there is no A+ coach available, you may have to try Emerald Axer's solution in that achievement page.
Hope this helps you guys!

Going to share how I got as simple as I can just to provide another solution in case anyone else has tried everything mentioned here to no avail.
I went from the main menu:
Rosters > Player Movement
Find Ottawa with your
With Anaheim, I swapped Getzlaf, Rakell and Slivferberg to ottawa for whoever (3 man swap).
Next,
I went to Tampa Bay Lightning (scroll with )
Take the top 10 players from Tampa (based on OVR) and make another 10 player swap (2 swaps of 5 skaters including the #1 goalie) with Ottawa.
These two lines from Tampa will serve as your top 2 lines perfectly.
Now start a Classic Franchise and make sure the salary cap, trades, injuries, fog of war and any thing else is turned OFF in order to minimize pop-ups during simming.
Before you sim a game, save. Next, go to Coaching Staff and Fire your NHL Head Coach with
Hire your AHL associate coach with
From here, sim the season and hope your team makes the playoffs. I can confirm, how well you do in the playoffs does not matter. I lost first round and still got the cheevo. I finished the season 47-27-8 and finished 2nd overall in the East during the regular season.
Keep repeating this process (You can try different AHL coaches, etc.) until you have a solid season. You can probably sim/save one or two times, but just make sure you still gave your original save file so you can start fresh. This is exactly what I did so it could be luck based, just keep grinding these steps. Hope you get it too!
This will pop after the victor of the Stanley Cup is decided.

I got this and the win the Stanley Cup as the 32nd expansion team in one shot. I am assuming the easiest way to get this is to create a new franchise with the 32nd expansion team. Pick that team and win the Stanley Cup and you should win this award with your new coach.

I had to suffer a little here, I’ll describe how I got the trophy. The jack adams trophy is awarded to the best coach, so I tried to reach the playoffs and win the cup, but the trophy did not fall, I tried with different teams, I tried with 32 teams, in all cases I took the cup, I was the leader in points in the seasons, everything was useless, in which At that moment I thought that the coach should be A+, but that didn’t help either, then after googling a little, I realized that in the real NHL the prize is awarded to the best coach not for the cup, but for the regular season, that is, the team has achieved some heights in the regular season. I started my career again, chose Minnesota, started simulating, by the end of the code season there were about 10 games left, I was behind the playoff bracket, I started simulating by periods, that is, I simulate 1 and 2, if they lose, then I get involved in 3 myself and win, because I needed victory to get into the playoffs and when the last 82nd game remained, it turned out that it was decisive for me, that is, if I win, then I advance to the playoffs from the last 8th place in my conference or from 16th in the entire league, well, of course I won . Then I began to think about whether to take the cup or not, I decided not to take it, since the prize is awarded as I said for the regular season, in the first round I lost, simulated to the end, the winner was determined and then the trophy just rang.

So it is! Tried 35+ simulations. As a result: Franchise > Classic > Anaheim Ducks > simulated until March 1, was far from the playoffs > won the remaining games manually, got into the playoffs in the last games, was eliminated in the first round, and received the trophy on June 1.

None of the above tips worked for me. I got the trophy like this:
- Played for the New York Rangers. To begin with, we choose four teams in each division that will be strong (and that will not undergo changes).
- Next, in the “Team Lineups” menu, we degrade the remaining 15 teams to the maximum. We exchange all players with an OVR of 70 or more for players with less than an OVR of 70, respectively, from European leagues.
-We are creating a new franchise. We check that there are no more than 4 strong teams in each division. It is important not to make changes to the composition of your team at any stage. This may affect the change in her status, with which it is basically impossible to win an award.
-We simulate the season from the beginning to the playoffs. If everything is done correctly, the player's help will not be needed to get into the playoffs.
-About 4-5 teams including yours will compete for the prize.
-We simulate the playoffs. The success or failure of your team at this stage no longer matters.
-If you're lucky, we get a trophy. If not, we create the franchise again and simulate it again.
-Since no user intervention is required, franchise creation and simulation itself does not take much time and sooner or later the trophy will drop. It fell out the third time for me. It will only take a little time to change the compositions, which will only need to be done once.

Repeated simulations of seasons with a KS victory did not bring any results. Then we had to look at who exactly in the game is given this award - the Jack Adams Award, it turned out that it is given to the coaches of teams that reached the VP, but were eliminated in the first or second round. Repeated simulations under this scheme also did not bring results. Then I had to look at what the general functions of a coach are in the game in Franchise mode, and what he influences. I found out what influences the formation of units and teamwork. So I selected the Calgary Flames team, simulated part of the season, then went into Lineup Management - Change Lines, rearranged the players in the lines to have the maximum number of green checkmarks. After that, I simulated the season until the end. The team was eliminated in the second round of the software. After the entire season ended, the Ice Dynasty trophy dropped around June 2020. I associate the loss of the trophy with the manipulations performed with the links. This process is recorded in the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avCKqVF5-dQ
