How to unlock the Competitor achievement in NHL 20 - Definitive Guide
2020-10-11 Season 52 was indeed the final competitive season. HUT events and limited time sets have now been sunsetted and this achievement is now DISCONTINUED
2020-09-20 There are currently no competitive seasons listed after the current one (Season 52). If you have the points, cash them in now otherwise you may not be able to. Season 52 ends just before Midnight PST Sept 20
THERE IS A FREE EVENT RUNNING RIGHT NOW UNTIL SEPT 11. GET THIS WHILE YOU CAN
This achievement requires you to earn a reward by having a leaderboard position during or at the end of a Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) competitive season.
This achievement last showed up in NHL 18 and the requirements are the same.
Competitive seasons can be accessed by going to the Online tab within the HUT. Competitive season will be shown on the right-hand side (as of May 1, 2020). Clicking on this option will bring up the list of currently active seasons.
There are two ways to enter a competitive season. The first, and easiest, is to wait until a season opens up with no entry requirements. As of May 1, 2020, there is a season up with no entry requirements, so this is the easiest time to earn this achievement. The season ends on May 5.
The second way, and by far the most time consuming, is to earn "Champions Points" by playing Rivals mode (located on the left-hand side of the Online tab in HUT) and redeeming 2000 points for a HUT Champions collectible. This will grant you entry into a HUT Champions competitive season. These seasons run every week for about 5 days. NOTE: HUT Champions collectible are tied to specific seasons, so if you have one do not wait to use it as you will be unable to after that particular season ends.
Once you are into a competitive season, you need to play the required number of qualification games (typically 3) to earn a leaderboard ranking for the round. Most seasons have multiple rounds, but to earn this achievement you only need to earn a ranking in 1 round. A reward is granted to all participants that are ranked, regardless of whete they are ranked, so once you play your minimum games you just need to wait until the round ends to claim your reward and the achievement. Rewards usually take about a day or so after the round ends to generate.
To earn your 2000 champions points, you need to play Rivals mode. This mode involves head-to-head matchups against other HUT users, where the winners will gain ranks and progress up through set divisions and the losers lose rank and slide down divisions. Champions points are awarded for wins and losses, with wins earning more points (roughly 5 times). You will also earn more points in higher divisions, so qualifying for HUT Champions will be easier the more skilled you are at the game. Either way, play anough games and you will eventually earn 2000 pts and the ability to redeem a HUT Champions collectible. For reference, in Division 8/9, I was earning 30 points for a win and 6 points for a loss.
Note that rewards earned in Rivals mode will NOT get you this achievement. Incidentally, rewards from both competitions are good ways to build your team and get some better cards to either use or sell.
This achievement will almost certainly be discontinued when NHL 21 comes out, so knock it out while you can.

i really hope so! Been playing against stacked teams, and end up getting 4 points per loss.

I don't want to be a dick to genuine players and make them play against a rubber banded controller for 20 minutes but also don't want to waste my time playing unwinnable games against 99 over teams.
