With the addition of custom leagues, this is the easiest/quickest NHL game so far to earn this achievement. Less luck oriented and quicker sims!
Setup a custom league with 6 teams, 20 games, and 4 teams making the playoffs. I subbed in Arizona for Toronto. We want to use Arizona because they are the lowest rated team out of this group at 80 OVR, and got rid of Toronto because they are on the opposite end of the spectrum in rating.
EDIT: With ratings updates, user Mikey Mud reported that Chicago can be replaced with Toronto for better results.
By using Arizona, "nobody" expects you to make it to the playoffs. But if 4 out of 6 teams make it, you have much better odds than the standard format. 20 games means you'll sim through this quickly too. You can even save-scum at different points in the season where your team is doing exceptionally well.
Now simply sim the season until playoffs are over. If Arizona made the playoffs it should award you with the achievement. If they did not, just re-do the simulation. I happened to have finished 1st in the standings after 20 games.
Hopefully I didn't just get "too lucky" with my first sim to earn this achievement.

I tried this months after the OP, and it seems the overall ratings have changed. Solution doesn't work with Arizona anymore, but Chicago seems to work as of 2/16/23.
