How to unlock the 500 Games Played achievement in NHL 2K10 - Definitive Guide

There's a number of ways to approach this achievement. Obviously this should be one of your last achievements so do almost everything else before starting to grind this one out (except the 2 online ones, they don't apply to the 500 games played total, so you can do them whenever). You may wish to work on 894 goals and 2000 points while doing this as well, though if you average 2 goals a game, you'll hit both well before the 500 games played (I had both before I hit 300 games played).

One thing to note: it's 500 games *played*, not 500 games *won*. So once you have your 200 wins for the Sharks trophy, you can lose another 300 games and still get this achievement, though losing is no faster than winning so why not win? :)

One more thing to note: at any time you can track your progress by going to the main menu -> "Features" -> "Trophy Room", and then pressing Y when you're in the trophy room. The "Games Played" total is the one related to this achievement.

Start with the obvious tips:

- play quick games
- 1 minute periods
- disable offsides, penalties, icings, anything that can cause a stoppage in play
- have a very strong team vs a very weak team (I usually do Team Canada vs Team Denmark, or if I feel like rooting for my team I do the Vancouver Canucks vs the Toronto Maple Leafs)

The slightly less obvious tip is to use 2 controllers. Put controller #1 (the one your profile is associated with) on the strong team, and controller #2 on the weak team.

Now, from this point there's a number of ways to proceed depending on how much time/involvement you want to have.

Shortest time/most involvement:
-------------------------------
- play the game, and as soon as the puck drops, pull controller #2's goalie. Score into the empty net, and then just work the clock. If you have no stoppages in play, skip the intermissions as quickly as you can by mashing the A button, and finish with a score of 1-0, each game will take around 4-4.5 minutes. So that's:

4.5 minutes/game x 500 games played = 2250 minutes
2250 minutes / 60 mins/hour = 37.5 hours

Most time/least involvement:
----------------------------
- As soon as the game starts, lock controller #1 to be the goalie. This will make the AI control the players on your team (note that any goals scored by the AI will still count towards the totals for 2000 points and the Kings Trophy). Odds are they'll score at least one goal before time is up anyways, but to make sure, you can also pull controller #2's goalie. Then let the controllers sit while you grab a bite to eat, watch some TV, check your e-mail, etc. Come back in a bit & start another game up. If you do this, the time per match will vary considerably. I've seen games take as long as 15 minutes because of all the extra stoppages, and as short as 5 minutes. This morning I used this method, and did about 15 matches in a little over 1.5 hours. So figure say on average 7 games per hour. That's:

500 games / 7 games/hour ~= 71 hours

So you're looking at anywhere from 37-70 hours, depending on how much involvement you have in the game.

Any way you shake it, it's going to be heavy slogging, especially for only 5 GS. This is partly why I suggest getting all other acheivements out of the way, as then you can think of it as being a 105 GS achievement (you get 100GS for getting all achievements in the game). ;)

If you are lucky enough to have a turbo controller then you can do what I did. Play the game until all you have left is the 500 games achievement and the unlock all achievements. I then set the periods to one minute edited the sliders so that the AI would win. I turned my HORI turbo controller on taped down the A button and taped the left stick in the down position. This is will ensure that the AI scores and then when the game is over it will start a new one. I did this over the course of two nights and had it play about 250 games for me. Once this is set up you can turn off your tv and go to sleep or leave the house. It still takes a long time you just don't have to sit there and play all those games.

This also works with the Street Fighter turbo pads, you just need to tape down the floating D-Pad and rubber band the A button.

Simply play 500 games. Make the periods 1 minute to get in more games. Going for the other achievements will help unlock this too. Unfortunately, you must play actual games as doing shootouts doesn't count towards this. The good thing is that you don't have to win the game.

This is probably one of the most time consuming trophies in this game because you have to play 500 games and you can't simulate them. A fast, and easy way to do it is to set the game at 1 min periods and the lowest setting so you could score a goal and win the game. You don't have to win, but it would be better so you could work on "Kings Trophy" and any other point related trophies there are.
