This could come naturally during getting the other achivements but if you want a fairly easy way of doing this then go kill the final boss, Lofty will ask you to awaken by charging up with A when he gets a gold circle around him.
These count towards the achievement so you can do this to hit 49 and then find one final gold orb to make the achievement pop, whether you do this to 40 or 50 you will need one final gold orb to trigger the achievement to pop

In the Vital Statistics the Total Number of Gold Balls Gathered doesn't increase following this guide. If this count towards the achievement the tracker for the achievement is not visible?
