I cannot 100% confirm but I think Baby Sheamus is correct. I am guessing they patched this out when they released one of the characters or something.

For those who want to just grind this out, I can confirm that just hitting rematch against the CPU works. So what you want to do is pick Battle > Stock and set the rules to
Mode: Stock
Stocks: 1
Time Limit: Whatever
Teams: OFF
Critical KOs: OFF
Friendly Fire: OFF
Pick Patrick as your character, and anyone as the CPU just make sure they're level 0. Jellyfish Fields as the map. When the match starts, just use Patrick's Down Special (down and X) and he'll suicide throw the opponent for a quick kill (you gotta be right next to them.) You'll still get the win, so then hit A on the victory screen to rematch until you get the achievement

Stocks: 1
Time Limit: Whatever

(90G) to unlock all the achievements for battling CPU enemies, and then also complete all of the achievements related to Sports below, as Sports matches are part of Battle mode.
Once you have all those achievements done, and you're ready to grind out 50 battles, make sure you combine it with Getting to Know the Family (30G) for playing as each character once. The fastest way to grind out local battles is to start up a Stock match in Battle mode, then, when you get to the character selection screen, press
to open the Rules. Set it to one stock per person. Now, start up a match with your character, and set up one CPU (none of their settings matters). Choose a small level, such as the first one (the Spongbob level with just a single platform you're on). As soon as the match starts, run off the edge to kill yourself, immediately ending it. At the results screen, until you've unlocked Getting to Know the Family (30G), make sure to press 
to change your Brawler, then repeat. Once you unlock Getting to Know the Family (30G), then just immediately choose Rematch after each match, and keep killing yourself. Each match should take around 30 seconds with load times, so this goes by pretty quick.
