How to unlock the A Round by the Pond achievement in NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... - Definitive Guide
There are 15 fish to catch for this achievement. The fisherman's Gambit quest has you catch 9 of the 15. Yonah asks you to catch one of them as well as part of the story.
All the fish can be caught with a lure but using a certain bait will increase the chance of catching the fish you want.
I would recommend finishing The Fisherman's Gambit quest before attempting to catch the other 5 fish as this will make it much easier.
All the bait needed for each type of fish can be bought from the fishing shop in Seafront.
For most of the fish you need to wait for the fish to fully bite, however on some of them you need to pull back on the left stick immediately after the first nibble.
I would recommend turning on the vibration if you play with it off as catching the harder fish is made much easier with vibration.

If you get help from the game in catching your shaman fish make sure to catch another on your own to actually count for this achievement.

There are a total of 15 fish to catch for this achievement. You will want to work on the Fisherman's Gambit side-quest chain to upgrade your fishing skill to maximum, which will allow you to catch the hardest fish in the game for Fish of Legend (10G), as well as this achievement. More info on those side-quests can be found in Go-To Guy (30G).
For a detailed list of the fish required for this achievement, where to find them, what bait to use, etc... see HERE.

There are 15 fish in total that you'll need to catch for this trophy, 9 of which are required for the Fisherman's Gambit side quest and 1 which is required for a story-related quest. Note that you'll need to progress the story into Part Two for the last 4 Fisherman's Gambit quests. For the most part, you'll be catching the majority of these in Seafront, but there are a few that will take you to Northern Plains, Eastern Road, and the Desert. There are 3 "rare" fish that are a bit of a pain in the rump to catch, but it's nothing that should take you a terrible amount of time.
You can catch a fish two different ways, both of which don't really follow the instructions given to you in the game. When you cast your line, you need to wait for the bobber to be pulled under water (save for the Blue Marlin, see below) and then yank it back to snag the fish, then basically tug-o-war it. To pull the line, you will need to either press or just pull back on the . Using just the is easiest with all the fish except of course for the Blue Marlin (again, see below). Once you have the fish, you need to pull in the opposite direction the fish is trying to swim towards, but while always pulling back on and making small adjustments left and right until you find the sweet spot, rather than going all the way to the left/right. Your controller will vibrate heavily when you're in the right spot and the progress bar on the bottom of the screen will turn a dark blue. The fish will be constantly moving around so make sure that you're paying attention to your controller's vibrations. While you might think you're pulling in the opposite direction based on visuals, you might not be according to the game's standards, so just pay attention to your controller. If you deplete the bar on the bottom, you'll catch the fish. If you can't find the sweet spot in time, your fish will swim off with the bait and you'll need to try again.
All of the baits can be purchased from the tackle shop in Seafront. The Sardine and Carp will be available for purchase from the fish vendor after you've caught each of them once.
The 10 Fish you'll be catching for the Quests are as follows (including their location and bait):

The 10 Fish you'll be catching for the Quests are as follows (including their location and bait):
-
Shaman Fish (Story-Related Quest):
- Location: Seafront Beach (this is the only fish that will be marked with a red "X" on your mini-map - all of the other fish in Seafront will be at the "pier", just next to the old man who gives you the fishing quests)
- Bait: None / Lure
-
Sardine (Fisherman's Gambit Part 1)
- Location: Seafront Pier
- Bait: Lugworm
-
Blowfish (Fisherman's Gambit Part 2)
- Location: Seafront Pier
- Bait: Lugworm
-
Rainbow Trout (Fisherman's Gambit Part 3)
- Location: Northern Plains (near the bridge that leads to the Junk Heap)
- Bait: None / Lure
-
Bream (Fisherman's Gambit Part 4)
- Location: Seafront Pier
- Bait: None / Lure
-
Black Bass (Fisherman's Gambit Part 5)
- Location: The Village Lake
- Bait: None / Lure
-
Sandfish (Fisherman's Gambit Part 6)
- Location: The Desert (Southern side in case you don't have the fast travel boat open)
- Bait: None / Lure
-
Royal Fish (Fisherman's Gambit Part 7)
- Location: Eastern Road Lake
- Bait: Earthworm
-
Blue Marlin (Fisherman's Gambit Part 8)
- Location: Seafront Pier
- Bait: None / Lure, and Sardines
-
Hyneria (Fisherman's Gambit Part 9 / Final Gambit)
- Location: The Desert
- Bait: Sardines
Out of this entire list, the Blue Marlin and Hyneria will give you the most trouble, but with the emphasis being on the Blue Marlin. The issue with the Hyneria is that it might take a few attempts for it to actually appear, then the progress bar for it is so slow to deplete compared to the other fish, so just be prepared to sit there for a while trying to reel it in. The Blue Marlin, however, is a pain in the ass. This is the only fish that you can't wait for your bobber to go under the water to catch. While fishing in Seafront, you'll notice that with the other fish, the nibbles are small and only vibrate the controller a small amount. With the Blue Marlin, you'll get one nibble and one nibble only, and it'll be an aggressive one that vibrates your controller much harder than the others. When this happens, immediately start reeling in your line. If you wait for a second nibble, it'll be too late and the Marlin will swim off with the bait. It'll take a few tries, but once you have them hooked on the line, reeling them in won't be too bad.
The remaining 5 non-quests related fish are as follows:
-
Shark (You'll more than likely catch 1 or 2 of these while going for the Blue Marlin)
- Location: Seafront Pier
- Bait: None / Lure, Sardine
-
Carp
- Location: The Village Lake
- Bait: Earthworm
-
Giant Catfish
- Location: Eastern Road Lake
- Bait: Carp
-
Rhizodont
- Location: The Desert
- Bait: Sardine
-
Dunkleosteus
- Location: Seafront Pier
- Bait: Sardine
The first 3 of these will be pretty easy to catch, but the last 2 will give you a run for your money, especially the Dunkleosteus. For the Rhizodont, it's really just a matter of having a lot of patience. You'll be catching a lot of junk and a few Hynerias while going for this one, but once you have one hooked, the time required to reel it in will be upwards to about 1.5-2 minutes, so prepare your thumbs for a good fight. You'll know when you've caught one as the first two nibbles will be as normal, but then the 3rd nibble will be delayed a bit. The sweet spot for your reel is very unforgiving with this fish, so make small adjustments as needed until you find it.
For the Dunkleosteus, this is by far the most rare fish in the game. You'll know when it's biting as it'll nibble the bait 3 times in quick succession. When you have it hooked, the progress bar will be painfully slow to deplete. Just make sure you're making small adjustments so you can easily find the sweet spot again should you lose it. You'll be fighting this bastard for upwards of 2 minutes, so do your best to not lose it, eh?
Once you've caught all 15 fish available in the game, the trophy will unlock. Fishing can be a great alternative to making quick gold if you're short on funds for anything, so there's a chance you'll be revisiting this as you go for Man of Means .
