How to unlock the Combo Master achievement in NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... - Definitive Guide

The first and easiest place to get this, and also Combo Fanatic, is in what we can call the “prologue” of the game.

As pointed out by @RabidPiano you will have an easier time getting this achievement during the prologue if you're playing on a higher difficulty.

If you do miss this at the start of the game, there is a second point you can earn it. I'll note that down below and credit goes to @good Super man for sharing this!

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...Combo FanaticThe Combo Fanatic achievement in NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... worth 16 pointsYou pulled off a 50-hit combo.

The key thing to remember here is to only use your sword/physical attacks - basically only press cn_X.

At the very start of the game, when you first meet the characters in a snowy city - you will be bombarded with monsters you have to kill.

These monsters are easy to kill and they keep coming.

You will get tips as you play that’ll tell you to use skills, but do not do this. As using your magic abilities doesn’t count towards the combos and will reset it.

Only your physical (pressing cn_X) attacks count.

Once you’ve got 50 and then 100 you will have unlocked both of these achievements.

If you do miss it here you can pick up both achievements by attacking the boar, which’s detailed in the other guide.

As pointed out by @good Super man There is a side quest during the second part of the game called "A Tale of the Study". There is a shade to defeat here however melee attacks don't work on it. so you can go ham and spam attacks until you unlock the achievements.

I got this achievement during the 2nd part of the game during a side quest called A Tale of the Study which takes place in Emil's Manor. The quest requires you to kill a shade in the study but the shade has a shield on it and your melee attacks do no damage to it but your combo will keep going up.

Though it's probably obvious, I'd just like to add that attempting this in the Prologue on Hard difficulty will make it much easier. On Easy or even Normal, the Shades die too quickly to be able to reliably keep your combo rising.

Thanks for this. Started a new game to grab this and the other one.

Also nice that you’re actually giving credit to people unlike the others.

This is as simple as starting a new game on easy and turning on autobattle.

Go to options make sure auto magic is switched off and attack and auto guard are switched on. When the prologue boss appears mash X if he tries to hit you you'll automatically dodge. He'll go down way before you get to 100 but as long as you don't jump up and attack the head like the games wants you to he'll keep getting back up indefinitely.

There are probably many other spots to do this but this is the earliest.

EDIT: Another easy location for this is Southern Plains, a big shade will show up in the middle area there early in the game. Same deal, set the game to easy , auto battle on and disable auto magic and mash X. The reason I say mash X despite having auto attack on is if left to Nier to attack he will pause sometimes long enough to break the combo.

This is definitely the easyest way to do it. Can be done in a secondary/dummy save slot and just took a couple minutes to be done if you don't bother to unlock it this way instead of keep punishing yourself with well timed weak attacks in big hordes of enemies without any reward than the sound ofthis popping in the first time..

The other guides are some of the options that I will exclude from my guide. I felt that another incredibly easy way to get this achievement is in the Shadowlord's Castle in the last act of the game while fighting "Goose".
Goose is a huge boar shade that after you "beat" it the first time, will armor up. Once he armors up and is beat the first time, he'll stand up & regenerate his health while starting to release a gas. You can constantly stand there and hit him (as mentioned in the other guides, magic does NOT attribute to the hit count). He won't die and will continue this loop until you choose to go through the door. Using a lance/spear will up your count quicker than a sword as this weapon has more hits in its light string.

Hope this helps!

A good opportunity to get this fairly early in the game is during the side quest to kill a boar (recommended difficulty normal or higher - thanks Connok in comments for feedback!)

Once you unlock side quests (after the first boss), the person who gives you this quest is sitting on crates as you enter the shopping area of your village, opposite a fountain.

Once you have accepted this side quest, it's time to go hunt the boar in the northern plains!

The boar is located near the entrance to the aerie. He has a lot of health, but this means more opportunity for hits and the good news is you can stun him, so target him, start swinging your sword at him and when he grunts, hit him with a dark lance - this will stun him. Keep swinging your sword until he grunts again and then hit him with another dark lance and repeat until dead.

I worked this out after already attacking him but I ended up with a combo of 160 by the time I beat him on hard difficulty. Video for this here :

If you missed this, once you get the mission to go to the scrap heap you will get a whole load of smaller shades by the bridge in the northern plains - I got a combo of over 200 killing these. Video below from 0:55 (sorry it's a bit rough/unedited)

Last suggestion is the easiest but is fairly far into the game. You will eventually get a side quest "A tale of the study". Attack the enemy in this side quest with cn_X (do not use magic) until you get a combo of 100 or more. I got to 690 before I got bored. Video here:

Happy hunting (both achievements and boars!)

The best spot to get this achievement is directly at the beginning of the game. You will be fighting waves of shade enemies and so long as you stick close to the boss and don't have it on Easy difficulty, you can rack up tons of hits by hitting the boss and surrounding enemies at the same time.

There's a chance this will unlock naturally, especially if you're killing all the Shades in the Northern Plains as you pass by them (there won't be that many to start, but towards the end, there will definitely be a plethora of them). If you don't want to chance it, there is an incredibly easy way to get this trophy.

During Part Two, towards the end of the game when you're in the Lost Shrine for the final time, you'll come face to face with a rather large boar. When you defeat it, another boar will appear, but this one will be heavily armored. Take it down and you'll come to learn that it doesn't exactly die, but instead revives itself and regenerates its health. Under normal circumstances, this would suck, but for this particular trophy, it's fantastic. After the boar revives itself, it will stop attacking you, allowing you to just sit there and beat its face in. Kainé and Emil will go through the next door to progress the story, but just ignore them and continue hitting the boar as it regenerates over and over. Once you hit the 100-hit combo, the trophy will unlock.

For a better reference point, please see the video below for a visual location of the part you'll want to keep an eye out for.

Easiest to complete while traveling through the lab with Emil. In the room where the TA key card is located, there will be many small enemies on which you can score a combo with a one-handed sword or spear.

Easily completed at the beginning of the game, when we go to the lost shrine to free yonah. If you do not take the help of the book, then small mobs will spawn endlessly.

Exactly where you can do this is when, on the way to Seafront, there will be a large shadow in a large area at the beginning of the game (there will be an HP bar at the bottom), he will have so much HP that there will be no problems filling him up. You just need to practice parrying a little and remember that when hitting the ground with your fist you need to dodge

The easiest way is Easy difficulty and auto battle with auto magic turned off. Take any big guy and the Persian himself performs combos on him and dodges attacks himself. I myself took longer to knock out combos, and then, on the second playthrough, I turned on Easy and auto combos, so this character made me 100x so many times both on packs of mobs and on bosses, while at the same time I was only able to do it once on Normal/

Extremely easy to perform on the boar boss (in the second stage) from the end of the game during the second or third playthrough. This is an immortal boss that can be kept indefinitely stunned. Reduce his health to zero, he falls, and the combo counter does not reset. Keep attacking until the hit counter reaches 100. It is advisable to use a one-handed sword or spear.
