Coins are merely a ranking system to show you've completed a trial and what difficulty you've completed it on.
Completing a trial for the first time automatically assigns it normal difficulty and grants a bronze coin upon completion. Beating it on Hard grants the next tier, and Very hard the final tier.
To unlock the achievement for all platinum coins, you've got to clear each trial on all 3 difficulties.

Possibly silly question but, do the coins stack does anyone know? So if i beat 3 tiers of the same challenge, is that 3 coins or just one coin per challenge?
