The Lunar Staff is a fast, agile weapon that is good at three things. Controlling crowds with its UT, killing Berserkers and killing bats and Ghost Fish. It can first be obtained in Chapter 4. After clearing the Military Gate area, head through the door and kill the enemies here. Instead of heading down the stairs to the left, continue straight and follow it round to find a large vase with the Lunar propped inside (as well as a gate you can open to Twin Serpents Plaza).
If you feel or find yourself with the need to grind out the 1000 kills in Story, there are two spots I would recommend. Chapter 12 has a respawning flock of bats in the area with the Save Point and the manhole to Tairon and Chapter 18 has a group of 45 Ghost Fish that respawn every time you use the doors to the Stairway to the Imperial Palace. Pick a spot, tap away at X until each enemy is dead, then leave and re enter the area to start all over again.

Another good place to do this is the ambush in chapter 12. Save when you get to hall of balance. Then go into the lift the the room with the pill bugs, kill all 40 to go back up then come back down for 80 more kills. When they are dead quit to menu, load the save back then rinse and repeat. I'm not sure if ET/UT kills count or if they are a separate thing so I just kept flipping of the wall and holding Y for a slam which usually gets a few per hit.
You can also grind out anything else here using pretty much the same method. They give out red quite often so you can do the ninpos too. Especially if you have a talisman or two because they refill your magic too so you can do two lots before resetting.
