A typical run without too much deviation will bring you up to lvl 6-8, depending on RNG. Trying to reach level 10 will normally require exploring multiple path branches on the map, so ideally there's a path covering most of each branch without too much backtracking on the same path (to save on food/hope). Example: 3 long branches that join each other just before the level's boss: clear the left branch, return on the middle and move to the boss again on the right side.
Look for extra fights on the encounters between crossroads, where you maybe would look for a more diplomatic approach otherwise. Every bit of xp does help.
Since we're running a lot back and forth on the map, you'll have to keep an eye on your food and hope. This is again very much RNG based, but as you're doing enough battles, you should have enough income to buy more luxury items for hope (while food is typically less of an issue once you get things rolling). Don't forget to share a luxury item before elites and bosses to give you an extra push during these tougher battles.
The last upgrade from 9 to 10 requires 25 batteries, so if you're close be sure you have enough batteries with you. Would be a shame to lose a battle on the way to the next market.
