How to unlock the Collector achievement in OCTOPATH TRAVELER - Definitive Guide

The other collection achievements for this game all link to an extremely useful resource created by another user:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14Kz5mTAYdxqdgjbkbotA...

This spreadsheet is also extremely useful for this achievement, flagging the rare cases where items are only available via steal from a boss, or certain key items that need to be acquired before resolving quests in alternative ways because they are needed for this achievement, and so on. I could not have completed it without it's assistance.

However, I want to highlight 3 specific items that are listed on the checklist but are easy to overlook because they are not tagged red (because they are not missable) and in some cases the reason for their inclusion is not mentioned. These items are only acquirable via random drops with challenge/provoke of certain NPCs.

They are:

Sand Man (Sunshade after Tressa Ch4, drops Ali's Bread)
Erstwhile Retainer (Atlasdam after Cyrus Ch1, drops Feather Duster)
Roving Naturalist (North Swarkii Trail after H'aanit Ch1, drops Mace, also has a Knowledge that can complete a quest, but the alternate way to complete that quest is a missable Key Item). This one has a 5% droprate and it's really irritating. I recommend doing it after Olberic is strong enough to kill him in 2 swings (it's just a 2 star challenge, so that's like, level 15-20).

The basic process I recommend to complete this achievement is to do it in concert with the other achievements. There are a few situations noted in the guide where items can be missed, so if you have already completed all chapters you may not be able to complete this achievement in an existing save (most significantly: Obsidian Garb must be stolen from secondary mobs in Primrose's Ch 3 boss fight, and it can't be acquired any other way whatsoever). You will need to make sure to acquire any Key Item used to resolve a quest (must be careful, as some quests can be resolved in alternative ways without getting the key items), make the proper steals, and so on and so forth. After completing 4 chapters, cleaning out all the rare steal and purchase items (battle tested, forbidden, etc), you will end up needing the following additional checks:

The 3 challenge drops listed above
The item obtained for defeating Galdera
Every weapon and armor sold in a store

I found it most convenient to do the stores last. If you are also doing the all chests, weakpoints of all items, and other challenges, your characters will have fought a lot of extra combats and be very overleveled - and therefore also be extremely rich. You can then fast travel to each city and buy 1 of any weapon or armor or accessory you do not have 1 copy of. You will make so much money doing all these achievements together that you should never need to sell anything, so you should be able to use the included item list in the checklist to verify if you are missing anything.

Unfortunately, the quest resolution key items and the Obsidian Garb make this achievement missable. In general for both this achievement and the all-chests achievement, keep in mind that in several instances, the storyline will engage a boss fight and pull you out of a dungeon *before you have reached the last treasure chest* and you will have to return to the dungeon afterwards. This happens in Therion's Ch3, Olberic's Ch4 and a number of others.

Can anyone tell me if you need to have all the items at once or just have had them? I'm not selling anything but some side stories ask for items. Should I avoid all of them until I pop the achievement?

Yes, there are a handful of items that can only be acquired via stealing. Use the checklist, it calls them out.

Its been a while since I played now, but if I remember correctly, most of those items are found in Primrose's chapters.

There's a reason this achievement has a TA ratio of 12.43, my dude. It is very annoying and easy to mess up.

You just need to have owned them at one point in the game. You can sell them if you want to.

However, if you're doing this concurrently with other achievements (like the all-weaknesses discovered) you will likely have oodles of cash and its a good idea not to sell anything so that you can easily go through your inventory and determine what you're missing if the achievement doesn't unlock. They sort into a natural order that's easily found online that you can use to identify missing items.

Its not the end of the world if you sell something, but it's much, much easier to figure out what you're missing if you don't.

None of the quest items turned in for quests will prevent you from getting the achievement. *however*, some quests have multiple ways to complete and if you take the path that doesn't use the item before acquiring it, sometimes the quest item becomes unavailable. The spreadsheet is really helpful about these, but you want to make doubly sure that you acquire the quest items even if you ultimately choose to resolve them in an alternative fashion. You *can* miss the achievement that way.

As a simple example there's a quest in H'aanit's hometown for a guy who wants to become a hunter. You can either get him a trophy by killing a mob, or you can use Inquire/Scrutinize to discover a hunting location and tell him about it. If you complete the quest with Inquire before acquiring the trophy, it's no longer available and it *does* prevent you from completing this achievement. However, completing the quest by giving him the trophy will not.

There are 3 or 4 of these in addition to the missable items in the form of one-off steals or areas you can't return to with chests in them which make this achievement missable.

I'm missing something... but I'm not quite sure what. I counted and have 61 Knowledges. I'm gonna have to print out another checklist & go through it again.

I've bought every weapon and armor, so either it's a small little item, or a missable thing like Attendant's Mask, Brigan's Garb, or Brigand Leader's Garb. Or any number of Quest items.. :(

EDIT: I found it!!! I am so relieved. I had forgot to buy "Forbidden Staff" from a priest in Saintsbridge. That Google Drive document is a lifesaver; the Items page even breaks it down to show 12 items in a row.

Warning: There are two items you can miss for this achievement. Take note of them in the Road Map.

This achievement requires that you have had one copy of every item in the game in your inventory at some point. You do NOT have to have all of them at the same time. In fact, it is impossible to do so as some of the items are only given once and used as part of the story (side-quests). You will get the majority of the items by completing the rest of the achievements (quest rewards, inside chests, etc). You'll also need the accessory from Galdera. From there, make sure you purchase one of every item from every town shop, and purchase/steal every item from every NPC you can find.

There are some unique items that can only be received by using Challenge/Provoke with Olberic/H'aanit, and some unique items that can only be received via loot or stealing during battle from specific enemies. Check this guide for a list of every item in the game, and how to obtain some of the ones you may not come across naturally.
