How to unlock the Timebreaker achievement in Odium to the Core - Definitive Guide
You can knock out a lot of time doing the death grind achievements. The only problem is that time is not counted as straightforward as the deaths are.
Time only appears to count while you are alive. Therefore, if we look at the 4 second average per death I gave for the this achievement:
You really only get around 2 seconds of play time per death. As an example, when I grinded out the 10k death achievement, I only went from the 3 hours achievement to the 6 hours achievement (I was likely around 7.5 hours total at the time). Keep in mind that this grind occurred while I slept and was running the game for about 8 hours.
So letting the game run will work, but keep in mind how much longer it will be than the actual required times.
As such, playing the game legit will cut down on the extra time spent in the game for this achievement. Still consider letting it run, but just don't be surprised when it doesn't add the amount of time you hoped for.
A note on idling - the game is able to run a level without inputs, but similar to Star Balls and its 500 hour achievement, you need to make sure your controller is plugged in and that your Xbox One is set to run constantly without input from a button press. It's not difficult to set up, but it is required.
Additionally, if you do idle the achievement, remember to finish a level before closing the game if you did not reach the longest of the time achievements (12 hours). Time and deaths appear to only count permanently after completing a level. If you quit out without completing a level, some users have reported that the death total reverted a much lower total.
