How to unlock the Smooth Ride achievement in Old Man's Journey - Definitive Guide
This is the only trophy in the game that requires some actual effort and can prove a bit frustrating to some, not in the last place because the game doesn’t always seem to register your moves right. Just after the last trophy you’ll board a train and while the train is moving you need to shift the landscape ahead of it quickly in order to keep the train going. If you’re too slow the train will slow down and eventually stop, which will omit this trophy from popping. When the train starts to slow down a bit you’re still good, but as soon as it blows the emergency brake horn you won’t get the trophy. Luckily you can get right to this bit through chapter select if you mess up. If you need multiple tries just try to memorize the track or alternatively use the video below and pause the game after each (couple of) tracks to be prepared for what’s coming next.
Note: this achievement is far easier with a mouse on a Windows 10 computer than using an Xbox controller or using touchscreen controls on a tablet. If you have a Windows 10 device and mouse available to you, I highly recommend using it to make this achievement as easy as possible.
Around halfway through the game you'll come to a section when you'll get in a train and it'll start driving. The goal for this achievement is to complete this section without the train ever needing to use its emergency brakes. This is indicated by a loud squeal when it brakes to stop, so make sure you have your volume up so you can tell if you messed up.
What you need to do is drag the oncoming pieces of land into place to continue the railroad track. This is the only achievement that requires some effort, but there's nothing tricky here. The train doesn't speed up, and the pieces of land are either above and need to be dragged down, or vice versa. Just stay alert and be ready on the right side of the screen at all times, because this section lasts a lot longer than you'd expect, so never let your guard down. Thankfully the pieces snap in place once they're relatively close to the train track, so don't worry about placing them at the exact right spot. Just drag quickly and they'll snap in place when they touch. If you mess up, you can quit out and reload the start of the chapter when you get on the train. Once you get to the end without the train emergency braking, you'll unlock this achievement.
