While in the air, you can either tap or hold either or to rotate your skater. Tapping will automatically rotate you 180deg, but no more. Holding will rotate you as long as you hold the button down. The nice thing about rotating is that you cannot slam if you don't land correctly (as long as you are going straight into a grind or manual. Otherwise you will slam). You simply won't earn the maximum number of points possible. And rotating and then landing sideways into a grind will allow you to perform different types of tricks.
