You can reduce your max mana through certain artifacts or pacts from the Shopkeeper. Pacts are the better option since they're easier to cycle through and don't have a huge pool to compete with. This can be done with any character but the easiest would be Shiso's Kunai loadout that only starts with two max mana, requiring only one pact to zero out.
