How to unlock the None for Me, Thanks achievement in Onimusha: Warlords - Definitive Guide

This isn't as difficult as the current ratio suggests. You will want to complete an entire playthrough without the use of herbs or medicine. Talismans are OK. I used a talisman inadvertently and still got the achievement.

A few tips then. Definitely play on normal. Samanosuke can regain health from yellow orbs so don't stress about taking damage. The lower your health, the greater the chance a yellow health orb will appear. Save often. Getting killed can set you back a long way if you fail to save.

Kaede's sections are a bit trickier but not too much if you consider the following. You don't need to kill anything except for the lizard guy at the end of her first section. When you do need to fight, her throwing knives are an excellent choice. Most of the time you will only want to attack enemies that are on your path, just so that you can get by. Throwing knives work wonders against the lizard guy. Remember to keep your distance from him throughout the fight.

Kaede's health does not replenish between her sections so bear this in mind. Consider using 1 talisman if you absolutely must, but it is possible to get through her 2 sections without taking any damage.

The dark realm. I gave this a miss on this run through. If you are confident that you can beat 20 levels without taking much damage, you probably wouldn't be reading this solution. Defeating Fortinbras without the Bishamon sword is going to be tougher but still very doable.

The final bosses then. Marcellus form. I had no talismans from this point onwards so make sure your health is already full when making your way through the evil gate. Chip away at Marcellus with the Enryuu after he lunges at you. Avoid the temptation to use you magic attacks until he's in his final form (2 flaming red swords). Stick and move until he changes. Then go all out with your magic. I used all spells and had to finish him off with the matchlock with burst ammo, so make sure that's equipped.

Finally Fortinbras. Use the save point. Now chances are, your health is at 3/4 at best. In the next room there are plenty of the enemies that have tentacles for arms. What I did, was farm them for health orbs. They spawn infinitely and each time you heal, head back and save. In the event you get hit, you can then just reload. Head down to Fortinbras with full health. If you have a talisman, this should be easy, if not it may take a couple of attempts.

Use your swords until he drops his head, then hit him with your magic attacks for maximum damage. Avoid his attacks. The only atack you can block is his stab so dodge everything else. When he uses fire, run along the front edge of the screen, don't stand still else you'll get burned.

Good luck and as I've said this isn't too difficult if you know what to expect.

Just spent 90 minutes working Marcellus and still feel like I got lucky. The deflect critical seemed key in the end.

Marcellus is a real pain if you do what I did and burn all your talismans and burst ammo doing the Dark Realm on this playthrough (dark realm really isnt bad if you enhance all your ammo to burst for floors that need crowd control and use the soul absorbers on the last few floors).

But...my protip for Marcellus...use one fire blast, then do two wind blasts (usually you will get enough magic for a second wind strike and his shield will drop). Then you should have one shot of lightning and fire on the double sword Marcellus. Best way to safely damage him from here is get in the back corner opposite the way you came in and hit him with Enryyu when he gets close to you. Pretty much block the whole time. Your Enryu hits can stagger him but dont do more than 2-3. If you hit that back corner he usually jumps back and will predictably do his dash attack that you can deflect counter (for the one shot achievo). Bank on having to do this at least once because when he gets low on health your Enryyu swipes stop staggering him and it becomes very hard to safely damage him.

You can complete this game with 3 play-throughs (2 if you really want to).

Playthrough 1
Play on Normal. Save often and create multiple save files. Get all the collectables and in particular, all 20 fluorite. Also, make sure you get the bishumon sword.

After completing the game with all 20 fluorite a mini-game called "Oni Spirits" will become available. Complete this game and you will be able to take the bishumon sword + infinite magic into the "ulitimate difficulty."

Playthrough 2
Play on ultimate difficulty with the intention of getting an S ranking. This will be a joke with the infinite magic, arrows, bullets and the big sword. Make sure you create a save point just before using the arrow to enter the underworld. If you finish the game with less than the 500 required kills, go back and farm the "dark realm". An S rank is +500 kills, +50,000 souls and less than 3 hours; pausing adds to your time.

If you are wondering if you can knock out no herbs, jewels etc during this fun run... the answer is no. I triedangry; the other achievements do not stack with this difficulty.

Playthrough 3
Play on normal again but this time do not use herbs/medicine or do not upgrade the swords or use any jewels. You can and are required to upgrade the ability to open doors. However, you still should collect all the herbs, medicines, bullets, arrows and jewels that you come across. I will explain.

Save often. The big challenge here are the parts with the female ninja. You play 3 times with her. The first time will be with puzzles and she really cant take damage. The second and third times, make sure you are mindful of her health as she can not regenerate. Make sure you leave her with at least 50% health for the third and final run with her.

The hard parts are the final 2 bosses. But here is where we make things easy. Create a save right before you enter the underworld using the bow and arrow.

With the save point created you can now break one set of rules and then reload the save and then break the other:
1. Finish the last 2 bosses using herbs or medicine. I collected about 23 herb/medicines. You can enhance all herbs to medicine if you want. You may want to convert some bullets to blast bullets too. Complete the game~just dont upgrade swords or use jewels.
2. Upgrade all swords and use all the jewels. I had around 50,000 souls and was able to upgrade all swords and most of my arrows and bullets. Complete the game~just dont use any herbs/medicine.

Talisman and soul absorber- these can be helpful in the final battles and do not count against the achievement. The talisman can be found in the east area on a small island to the south that will require you to shoot an arrow to extend a bridge. The other can be farmed in the dark realm on wave 15(not really worth the effort). The soul absorber can be used to release the souls of any enemy that will give you health/magic when you need it.

If you are having any problems with the bosses:
Giant bee woman-use up all magic in this combination order wind, when stunned; fire then lightning. Then use burst bullets.
Marcellus- Use up all your magic until he is in second form. Then use burst bullets. Should take about 12 shots.
Fortinbras- This time lightning followed by a fire when his head is low. Grab the magic orb and use wind to block when pulling in the magic orb. When he uses the fire breath stand in either corner and fire flame arrows. If you are out of magic, spamming the flame arrows while dodging attacks works OK until you are able to get another orb.

Note: I want to preface this solution by saying this trophy is not easy. A lot of guides recommend a 1st playthrough no upgrade, no herbs/medicine run and I strongly disagree with this. No upgrades is definitely feasible for newcomers/1st playthrough but no healing is the hardest challenge in the entire game in my opinion. I would recommend doing it during your 2nd playthrough. Onto the solution...

For 80% of the game you will fight regular enemies as Samanosuke and they drop yellow souls that heal you, especially if you drop below 50% HP. I'll cover the strategies and give advice for the hard sections:

Kaede: You use Kaede for two major sections of the game. Try to never get hit as Kaede can never recover HP from souls and her HP carries over into her second major section. Run past all enemies you can. Some rooms have bow demons which you can kill by throwing a Kunai as you enter the room. At the end of her 1st section, you'll have to fight and beat one of the cloned enemies, just run around him and throw kunai when he appears. I would recommend beating the 1st section with at least 50% of your HP as the second section is quite long and has stronger enemies, although you can mostly avoid all of them and there's no forced fights.

Demon Realm: It's possible to beat the demon realm without healing but I wouldn't recommend it unless you feel confident in your skills. There's 20 floors of all enemies types except bosses.

The flying queen insect boss: Before using the boat to cross the water near the end of the game, ensure you have near 100% HP because you have to do a Kaede section and then go immediately into the boss battle with Samanosuke. Use your gun here. She can be hit off screen and at a distance with the gun. She takes about 20 shots to kill. Kill the ant soldier things with your magic attacks to get health orbs.

Marcellus: This is the 2nd hardest part in my opinion. Learn his moves and dodge side ways accordingly. Use your magic sparingly during the 1st phase (when he has a shield) as you'll need it during the 2nd phase. You'll most likely have a talisman that revives you at this point. Try to not use it but if you have to, it'll make the last boss a bit harder.

Final boss (right after Marcellus): If you saved a talisman then this will be much easier. Learn his attack patterns and dodge accordingly. Keep in mind he takes no HP damage until he lowers his head, so don't bother with ranged weapons. Keep attacking the body normally until he lowers his head then unleash a magic attack on the head. Do this about 10 times. He's not that hard once you learn his attacks but he does take a long time to kill and that's why the talisman comes in handy.

General tips and advice: Don't do this with the no upgrades run as you'll want as much damage as possible, especially for the final two bosses (although you can make a backup save before them, if you got that far with no upgrades). Don't worry about taking damage as Samanosuke as he can easily recover via yellow souls but do be mindful as Kaede. Try to save your talisman for the final boss.

Overall it's not that hard except for a few sections and with mindful preparation they are easily doable. I just wouldn't stack it with the other challenge trophies as it's much easier and possibly even faster to do another playthrough for them. Good luck.

MISSABLE

To earn this, you can’t heal yourself with herbs or medicine. The only way the game let you cure your wounds is by absorbing yellow souls from defeated enemies. It’s not hard as it looks. Your worst moments will be at some boss fights, but take your time to learn how to defend yourself and the enemies movies. Try to skip every fight you can. Sometimes you can just enter in a new room with enemies, just go back to the previously room and back again, because, doing this, in some places, like the Abandoned Keep entrance, will make demons despawn.

Memorize all boss fights and they movies so you don't get hit too much. Apart from the bosses, the game is pretty simple to handle without the use of healing items. Just one more thing to keep in mind is that Kaede health will stay the same between sections of the game you play with her. Which means if you have 10% health and a checkpoint where you regain control of Samanosuke, Kaede will stay with the 10% and since she doesn't absorb souls, she can't help much but will give healing items.
